I am no teacher but I think at least 1 mark should be awarded.

The answer is just incomplete but it is not wrong.

Chinese - Tough, right ? :nailbite:

        Yes, pixiedust -
I also cannot understand why DD1 answer was wrong and not even awarded 1 mark 😢 ...Teacher no reply yet so I wonder if this type of question will to come out in the coming paper, is she supposed to copy the answer \"direct speech\" from the passage? I am getting a bit :? and :scared: for my DD1 😓 :gloomy:

That's why we alawys aim for those questions (MCQ and identify three ci u from the passage) for upper primary paper 2 so as to get as close to 62 marks as possible.

Then hopefully to score more on the remaining 28 marks from those Open & End questions.

          Just my 2 cents thought

Good tip, Brenda. We try to do that too but the MCQ can be quite tricky too so just 😓 The grasp of the language is just not strong enough *sigh*

verykiasu2010, in that case, can help to verify : 从哪里可以看出/知道 type of questions, to lift or not to lift ?

sorry to miss this earlier on:

when you see \"从哪里可以看出/知道\" straight away the required answer does not sound like going to be direct lifting. you need to paraphrase......\"from what he says / or because he says ......... or by what he does ...... hence we know what what what.....\"...

children are taught how to paraphrase, and to do so, must read the whole passage, and have an overall view / understanding of the passage

sigh, I think the problem is that different schools / teachers do it differently. In P3, it was

                从" quote " 可以看出/知道
in P4 in another school, it was ‘just answer no need to quote’
my kid was understandably confused, and frankly, so was I

the test is on overall understanding of the whole passage, in general what is the story line etc....so they make it difficult to match familiar words for direct lifting purpose. the skill set needed is ability to articulate / rephrase ..... admittedly this is the killer part

Looks like Chinese has no standard way of marking hence answering?

Does anyone know if there is a difference in the way one answers for Normal Chinese paper versus the HCL paper OE or are they the same in terms of guidelines? This might explain why the different practices in schools.

It depends on the primary level. In the lower primary, you can quote directly from the passage. Sometimes the way the questions are phrased in a way, it makes it hard for one to quote. You need to rephrase in order to answer to the question.

the latest emphasis is on ability to rephrase it in answering the compre question as proof of understanding (comprehending) of the passage
