All About Life Without Maids

I have survived about 10 days without a maid. It is very tiring. There are so many things to do like doing two loads of laundry everyday, cooking and cleaning. I hate to take out the garbage every night. The maid's room became a \"walk-in wardrobe\" for our clothes until my youngest daughter decided to fold and sort out the clothes. Everyone in the family must play their part to put away their things to keep the house tidy. But I think it is worthwhile. I cook healthy meals that are low in salt and oil. There is a kind of freedom when you do not have a maid in the house; you can turn on the TV volume and not worry of disturbing the maid's rest. The children learn to be responsible and independent and this is the most important reason not to have a maid. Given a choice, I will employ a cleaning auntie to help out. But none of my family members share my belief..

Oh me too! I hate washing toilets.

There is a mini scooba from irobot that can clean toilet floors. It's not yet available in Singapore but is recently released in US. It manages only the floor so you'll still have to wash the toilet bowl, basin and walls yourself.

After I wash toilet I will feel totally exhausted :gloomy:
Washing toilet bowl =drain 20% energy
Washing basin n mirror= drain 10% energy
Scrub toilet wall and shower screen =40% energy gone
Wash toilet floor =30% energy gone
Clear toilet drainage = drain 10 % energy

If the mini scooba can only take away 30% of my workload then i am not looking forward to it's release in Singapore

I guess getting a part time maid or asking DH to wash the toilet is still the best solution at the moment. :pokeeye:

If you have no major problem with your maid, would you still prefer to go maid-less?

My maid of 5 years is great and plays along very well with my ds(5 & 9yrs old). They said they are best friends…
Both ds will be in school from 7am to 4pm daily and I am a SAHM.
I have always been the one cooking, doing marketing and taking care of my kids. My maids’ major task is playing with the kids, preparing our breakfast and housework. I am neither a clean freak nor a fussy person, so I don’t request that the house is always neat and tidy.

Am toying with the thought of going maid-less.
But my younger ds wants to have porridge and I need yakun coffee and my oatmeal cereal for breakfast. Can’t imagine I have to wake up at 6am to do all these!
Yet I envision the privacy I will have when maid-less.
The only thing about my maid is that she likes to join in ALL conversations that I have with my kids and dh. From general issues to major ones like buying house. Sometimes it irks me but I never told her off cos I think she behaves thus cos she feels at ease with us.

Seems that most of you go maid-less cos of problems with maids. What about in my situation? The little bit more of privacy is worth having to go through the morning madness rush and not having someone to be at your beck and call?

Thanks allseasons and fifiyeo for the good suggestions of gadgets that will make housework easier. I will explore these options.


I hope to share with BeautifulLife about my experience as a SAHM where the best part is playing with the kids. Your kids will be even closer to you without your maid. As for porridge, there is the slow cooker or what is commonly known as the crockpot for overnight cooking. Just dump in the rice, meat and hot water and it will be ready in the morning.

Actually for me I would find my maid joining in for ALL conversation a maid issue. I feel they should know their bounderies. Our boss, friends and family members won’t like it too it we put our 5 cents worth into everything.

I’m sure you’ll enjoy the privacy of not having a maid.

how much did you pay for it, its is good? i was thinking of buying one too, but my frd said it may consume alot of electricity.

You can consider some good electronic gadgets to help you out.

I got an Osim steam vacuum to steam mop the floor once/twice a week and an irobot Rhoomba to automatically vacuum my floor everyday. Washing is solved by washing machine and a dryer. All these help a great deal.

I'm looking into getting an irobot scooba to wash my kitchen floor 'cos I do cook everyday. It's something worth considering.

Can get a dish washer and a good iron to ease the ironing part too.

My in-laws also don't share our idea about not having a maid. They think we are crazy 'cos they can't live without one.

The dryer consumes quite a bit of electricity so when you are buying one, make sure it’s got as many of those energy saving approval ticks as possible.

The Rhoomba works on a rechargable battery and if you use it often, you really don’t have to let it run its full cycle and you floor is really clean. You will be amaze how much dust, dirt and hair it picks up even with daily use.

(I use it daily so I just put it on for 5-10 mins per bedroom. Since I don’t use the Rhoomba for such a long time at each go, the recharging time is also much shorter. After that you can turn it off.)
