Can a child goes to a SAP secondary school if he does not do higher Chinese in his primary school? Is it compulsory for a child to get A for chinese and English to get into a SAP school? Does he need to do higher Chinese in the SAP secondary school?

sec school higher chinese is not offered only by the SAP sch

being able to offer HCL at sec school depends on PSLE overall result

Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL)—Pupils may opt to offer HMTL (viz. Higher Chinese/ Higher Malay/ Higher Tamil) from S1 onwards if they offer MTL or HMTL at the PSLE and are in the

Top 10% of the PSLE cohort; or
Top 11%—30% of the PSLE cohort and meet the language criteria i.e. an A* grade in the MTL or at least a Merit in HMTL.
Interested pupils can apply to offer HMTL when they report to their secondary school in late-December. They will attend HMTL lessons at their school if the school offers the course, or in a designated centre if the school does not. Please refer to the list of schools and designated centres offering HMTL (64kb .pdf).

My boy is not keen to do higher Chinese in secondary school and Chinese is his weakest subject. Currently, he is in P5 and his strength is in Maths and Science. We would like to send him to SAP school due to only express stream is offer in such schools.

then you should consider NUSH rather than SAP school

It is an independent school. The school fee will be very costly. It is also very far from our home (sengkang)

Or any IP school for that matter. All have only express stream. And whether to do HCL or not - it depends on his choice. It is not compulsory even in SAP schools to do HCL, altho' encouraged.

Thanks for all your info. I am glad to know that we have more options. my boy prefers to go NUSH but we have to consider the fee and the distance. Also have to depend on his PSLE result. :thankyou:

Express stream is offered in all schools. HCL isn't compulsory in most schools, except possibly for the SAP schools. So your options are wide.

Note that many of the IP schools are also independent schools and hence school fees will be high too.

if able to enter IP school, then mostly can qualify either the EESIS or the bursary or the school's own financial assistance / award

My son is in P5 in a SAP school…dropped HCL at the end of P4. He doesn’t hate CL but coming from Eng-speaking family, it’s naturally tougher. Anyway, it is a blessing he dropped it bcos P5 is very tough.

Daughter is not in SAP school…school gives the option to do HCL if results are good end of the year but can drop if unsatisfactory. I’m not too concerned whether she takes HCL or not…just hope that she can continue with affiliated sec in Sec 1 Express.
