Did they do breast massage as a matter of routine, or because of engorgement? Sounds painful! I didn’t have any massage done at the hospital after delivery…but I didn’t have engorgement either.

The LCs told me to massage before bf, to prevent \"clogs\" of the milk ducts and to help with the milk flow.

So it's like SOP for them to show me how to massage and I was the prop

But there are times, when bb want to feed immediately so I gave up about the massaging after a while. I don't suffer from engorgement too, my ss is always = to demand after the end of 2nd month of delivery.

I didn't know whether it was routine or not, but phankao says yes, so shd be.

I usually always suffer from engorgement in the 1st week or so, for all 3. Seems to me my body and the bb trying to adjust to each other and haven't got the match right yet, so at the start always engorge quite badly. Esp since 1st week my bb all tend to drink a little then sleep for long time, yet the milk suddenly come in.

But ya, like you, after 1st or 2nd month or thereabouts, usually stabilize and bb will drain everything with each feed. So I never had the chance like some of u, to have fridge full of frozen bags. 🙂

Express means even more milk will be produced and exacerbates your \"engorgement\" problem. If it is not too painful, just leave it to adjust with your baby's demand. If really painful, try cabbage treatment.

                  Supposed to.

With ds1, I did, cos I still had a pump then. But with ds2 and dd, just squeeze and massage with hands during warm shower and during bb nursing would usually ease it. I nurse more frequently too, whenever bb is awake.

A bit wasteful of the milk when in the shower, but with experience of ds2 rejecting the bottle, I don't know why I should keep it for, since I don't use it for the hair, soaking feet, bathing or what.

oic. Did not know that, thought just express, then can find relieve as well as stock up bm in the fridge.

oh ya, forgot to mention that if express, probably just to ease discomfort, cannot express too much, then more milk will come in. thanks for reminder on this point, phankao.

i tried cabbage for all 3, but i am not sure if it really works or it was just the warm shower and massage? does it really?

i read about the enzymes of the cabbage and all, is that true? i can't imagine how it actually works though??

                        Hi

The cabbage works for me! I used it for DS1. Engorgement was so bad that DS1 couldn’t latch on and I was in pain, so went to see Wong Boi Boi at TMC. She massaged for quite a while and sent me home with the cabbage tucked inside…was so embarrassed when walking to carpark cos looked so big up there. Anyway, after few days, & together with some pumping for baby, managed to overcome it. Also had engorgement for No.2, 3, & 4 but managed to get my babies to "pump" out to relieve it…they are the best "pumps" around.
