Reading the book bc yes, I prefer him to have exposure to much longer run-on stories and with lots of words together on one page as compared to those children books. We do all sorts of books, that is.

are you just reading the story book version with your 2 yr old to get him interested in listening to chinese?
are you doing the SWKD book 1 and the flashcards with your 2 yr old too? My kid is 2 yrs 8 months but i find that she gets disinterested very quickly. the manual says not to press it on them once they lose interest, even if they only pay attn for 5 mins, so that's what I've been doing. stop once she loses interest. sometimes out of the blue she asks to 'read chinese words' and specifically wants to take out the SWKD book. But sometimes she asks for book 7. i tell her it's too hard and let's look at book 1 first but she (hiyah terrible twos) insists on 7 so i just let her look. .
We are not doing any of the earlier SWKD books bc my boy can already read fluently. He has no problem at all with p1 to p2 level vocabulary. He's able to read around 90% of p3 to p4 vocabulary. -
Wow! At 2 yrs plus? That’s amazing… He’s going to find pri sch Chinese such a breeze next time. Might get bored and have to do more advanced stuff during class in future…

It's not surprising bc he showed us that he could read by the time he was 10mths old. So quite natural to continue to progess. He amazes me with he can read sometimes . -

I’ve a 2+ yr-old boy and he’s quite good with word recognition so he can read simple sentences already. However, the issue I have is he’s reluctant to read independently even though he’s able to do so on his own albeit not so fluently (ie. requires effort on his end). As he loves reading, we do a lot of books together every night both in Mandarin and English but Im wondering how can I prod him gently along to the next level (ie. to read independently). My intention is not to do away with our nightly read-together sessions but to get him to try reading on his own with less resistance on his end. As it is, he gets frustrated when I ask him to try even though I assured him that he knows the words in the book and I am there to help him along if the need arises.
I read with amazement on how your 2-year old can read independently and I am wondering what can I do better to guide him. Did your boy exhibit any of the above symptoms in the course of reading independently? Looking forward to your advice. Thanks! -

My 2yo can read independently, but he really prefers we read to him (or with him). That's really fine, I feel. They are so young, so to read a long book, esp those with small words, can be tiring for them, and then you won't be able to go through as many books as you want to for the day or that bedtime. When I stop reading a sentence, he always finishes for me. It's an app. Can download with your iPod touch or iPad or iPhone. The apps are free, that's why I got an iPod instead of a Chinese electronic dictionary . Small enuf to go in my pocket of even small bag. Then any word I don't know, I just use my finger to write how what the Chinese character looks like and I'll be able find it in that dictionary. I use the apps \"KT-DICT\" and \"pleco\".

just to update. my DD has completed book 2 of basic chinese. now we are in secodn word of book 3. she loves the daily chinese words recognition. im thinking i can try with my 16 m-old boy huh… see if he can read earlier… hee
