      Number of pupils in Jing Tao remained the same in 2008 and 2009.

      In 2008, ratio of pupils in Jin Tao : Shu Quan = 3 : 5 = 12u : 20u
      In 2009, ratio of pupils in Jin Tao : Shu Quan = 4 : 5 = 12u : 15u
      So 20u -15u = 120, 5u = 120, 1u = 24

      In 2009, number of pupils in Jin Tao = 12u = 12 x 24 = 288

          I couldn't understand why 1/8 of girls is equated to 4/5 of boys. Also instead of making the number of units 40 for boys and girls (taking the LCM of 8, 5), why each unit is divided into 4 instead. Sorry if it's a simple one. I'm trying my best to explain my DS with the solution.

              This is what the model show in pictorial form:

              4/32 of girls + 4/5 boys = 24
              So, 1/32 of girls + 1/5 boys = 24 /4 = 6 ---- (A)

              5/32 of girls + 5/5 of boys = 24 + 6 = 30
              Total girls and boys
              = 32/32 of girls + 5/5 of boys
              = 27/32 of girls + 5/32 of girls + 5/5 of boys
              = 27/32 of girls + 30
              = 84

              27/32 of girls = 84 - 30 = 54
              1/32 of girls = 54/27 = 2

              Number of girls who failed = 28/32 of the girls = 28 x 2 = 56
