Fun Poll - How Much Would You Spend On A Watch?
-
I continue to be amazed at the amount of money some of you are willing to spend on something that tells the time (and maybe look pretty on your wrist). Do we not have enough time telling devices on our phones, in our cars, on our computer screens ? Some say they are investments… anyone made a killing selling their watches?
Please educate me. -

In my view, my pretty rose gold Omega with diamonds and mother of pearl is a bracelet that happens to tell the time.I continue to be amazed at the amount of money some of you are willing to spend on something that tells the time (and maybe look pretty on your wrist). Cheaper than my diamond ring, but gets more attention... -

Having a expensive watch is not about telling time. It's also about self esteem, feeling good, etc... so it definitely goes beyond telling time. In addition, it can also be an addiction once your collection start :moneyflies:I continue to be amazed at the amount of money some of you are willing to spend on something that tells the time (and maybe look pretty on your wrist). I sort of hold the same view as the previous forumner's posting. I would rather buy a watch than a 1 carat diamond ring. The reason is that the value for a watch holds while a 1 carat diamond don't.
I don't really think anyone will make a killing on their watches unless it's a much sought after limited edition. But for certain brands, the value does retain. Eg. a 20 years rolex may still be able to fetch $2-3K. So far observed that Patek Philippe and rolex value holds better. The others tend to have a higher erosion when it comes to resale market.
But for those addicted ones, it's about upgrading to a better watch along the way. Someone I met told me that she would buy a new rolex, wear for 2 years, sell away and then she would upgrade to the next model. So she is always constantly wearing new watches. -

Thank you, MMM. So watches are more about self-esteem than telling time... ok, it must be the pragmatic engineer in me that fail to get it. I guess the watch industry must be doing one heck of a marketing job for these watches to be so popular despite the availability of Casio and other cheap digital alternatives which are more accurate, require no servicing and even function as alarms, calculators, stop watches etc.

I don't know much about about watches but aren't some of the high-end ones wonders of precision engineering? Is that partly why they cost so much?

You may not make a killing but it can be a decent investment.I continue to be amazed at the amount of money some of you are willing to spend on something that tells the time (and maybe look pretty on your wrist). 20 years ago, my FIL inherited a Rolex watch from his father. The watch was at least 30 years old and had been well used. He managed to sell it for around $5k. I'm not sure about the original cost but it should be no more than $500. So you're looking at a 10 times return after 30 years, which is not bad at all, considering that you get to use it. But if the money had been used to buy a house, the return would have been around 50 times. -
Upon reflection I realise I buy expensive (in my eyes lah) watches whenever I sell my house. And that’s only twice. And once upon a time I had many many swatches and pasar malam antic-looking pieces.
