School Placement Exercise for returning S'porean children
-
if you go to the MOE website, it has always state that MT exemption is on a case by case basis.
Unless you can prove that your child have not been taking Chinese at his current school in China, I would say that your child will have a very slim chance in applying for exemption. JMHO.
May I know why you would like your son be exempted. I would have thought that being in China the last 6 years would have given him lots of exposure and practice on the language. -
Hi Gnome
it might be easier to maybe go thru sec sch with one less subject to stress over. I guess you are right , it would be tough to get exemption.
Contrary to the belief that even though we are in china, there are lots of Asian kids in other Intl sch with very weak mandarin ability.
So does it mean if my kids go to the British school in China, his chance of exemption is higher? -
Hi Zappie,
This is what a friend shared with me about applying for MT exemption recently:
For returning students from foreign countries, they are advised to apply to MOE for MT exemption via their schools. The respective school’s Chinese teacher will then assess the student’s ability in the language and make appropriate recommendations to MOE regarding the exemption for PSLE.
However, I’m not sure if the previous country of residence has any bearings on the application for exemption. Perhaps, you can clarify this directly with MOE? -
Hi Chamonix
Thx for sharing. MOE is rather tight lipped on the matter. They mentioned that it is on a case to case basis. Nevertheless, I’ll try for the exemption and hope for a favorable outcome.
On another note, are there any overseas Singaporean sending their kids back to do the PSLE or DSA this year? I have registered my DS for the PSLE but was advised to let him do the SPERS instead. -
Hi everyone
In case anyone is applying for DSA, I called MOE and was told that if your child is successful in his DSA, he must sit for the PSLE to qualify for the DSA, not SPERS.
Has anyone encountered this issue? -
Hi Zappie,
I have PM you a forum which may have the answers to your queries. Hope it helps.

Hi all
I am also seeking exemption for MT (Chinese) for my boy. We have just returned earlier last month leaving my husband back in Australia for my #1 to join a primary school here for term 3 to let him adjust and adapt to Singapore System. We have been away from Singapore for 6 years, more than 3/4 of his life.
Need your advise on how to successful getting the application through as my boy is struggling with the subject and also he is at a disadvantage compared to his peers who are here all the time.
I asked MOE who told me to apply to school, check with the MT teacher, told me to go direct to MOE. So what are the documents that I need to prepare to submit to MOE? We were based in Canada and Australia and there were no conducive environment for him to learn MT. -
Hi mummyKoala,
When your ds joins his new primary school, request for a MT exemption form from the school office. Fill it up and return it to the sch office. They will submit it to MOE on your behalf. I don’t remember providing any additional documents since the school would already have copies of the past academic results. -
Zappie:
MT exemption for returning Singaporeans is not difficult to obtain, but you should leave a door open to take MT at Sec school. Between PSLE and SPERS, my vote is definitely for SPERS.Hi Chamonix
