hi edanson, last year my girl was saying unfair too - better be boys. Because the PSLE COP for HCI was lower than Nanyang and eventually both would proceed to the same HCJC. hahaha !!
However, the boys who applied for DSA to HCI still need to go through an interview and a writing test even though they obtained above 80 % too - my son says unfair - is better to wear skirts  :x
All his boys classmates, regardless of Platinum winner or RI Math winner who top singapore need to go though interview - there is no guaranteed entrance to both schools - they are just hear say or myth.

Haha ...must ensure balance of both genders becos HCJC or now call HCI already...part so call produce leaders of the future - man and woman!

Ok, not only one classmate but if I am not wrong, there are about four or more who received letter of acceptance without even taking any test.
Yr son's classmate must have some attributes that NYGH find suitable to enter. Congrats to her really.
Ok , they applied through the GEP domain.
But the boys (also GEP domain) did not gain any immediate acceptance. In fact the boys fair better then the girls - almost 90% for SA1
I'm sure those are from GEP domain. For the mainstreamers, they only started to attend interviews last week and received calls this week. I guessed only those who really excelled in the CCAs they applied under or those top-of-the-cohort type got confirmed so far. The rest, have to wait. But that does not mean totally no hope liao. However, out of the 900 plus applicants for this year's DSA, they are choosing (i guessed) slightly more than a hundred (??) - the chance is not very high unless you have 'something' they are looking for. Like HCI, those on the front of the waitlist have a good chance to get in too as some of those 'confim' candidate will most likely chosse RGS if they also received confirmation from RGS. -

My son was not selected to represent his school (As there are too many GEP pupils). He did not have any external training. I have to provide the 'internal' training for him.Wow! looks like your son is sure to get a place. Although my son was selected by his school for SMOPS, he didnt get any award coz his school didn't provide any formal training
He was selected based on his consistent good results for Maths. He was only given 4 lessons (2 hours each) by his Maths teacher and off he went for the competition. Is like sending him to the battle field without teaching him how to hold his rifle :stupid:
In my opinion, Maths Olympiad is not like any other gifted test (e.g P3 GEP screening test or GAT whereby preparation is not encouraged). In fact, I realised that many schools engaged external trainers to train their students and on top of that, some parents even sent them for private tuition.
Anyway, I'm not putting too much hope for DSA coz it's really tough competing among all the awardees. I am already happy that he was selected for the RI Selection test as I know of people with formal training didn't even make it to the selection round :? -

That's where I feel that they are not competing on fair ground. GEP pupils are trained and exposed to maths olympiad type of questions. Good thing that you can give ''internal'' training. Your hard work has definitely paid off.

Not all GEP schools provide GEP kids external MO training. It is real hard to say whether it is fair or not. GEP kids have too much school work and projects that they do not have much time to prepare for MO. Social study is counted as one major subject in GEP and they have a lot of readings and reports to do just for this single subject. Not to mention ERM for science and projects for english. Where to find time to do MO type questions to prepare for the competition? A lot of GEP kids do well in MO because they are good in this area, that is the purpose of the GEP screening test and thatโs why they are selected for GEP program. External MO training did help but this only played part of the success. Anyway, there are so many MO training center around, so any kids can just sign up and get "external" training. -
Merlion:
Well, it's also real hard to say that all GEP kids are gifted just by one MCQ screening exam. I have heard of many parents sending kids for courses in preparation for GEP screening test. And yes, some will be lucky to get in. Some of them managed to cope because they are high ability (not gifted) kids. Their curriculum already exposed them to challenging maths.> That's where I feel that they are not competing on fair ground. GEP pupils are trained and exposed to maths olympiad type of questions.

On the other hand, there are lots of non-GEP kids with high ability and potential to excel but not given the opportunity. These are the kids who will lose out in such competition and even DSA. Is this fair competition?
Not all parents have the means and ways to send their kids for MO training. But of course, there are also non-GEP kids who went for training and won awards. -

I think Math can take alot out of those little ones..good in Math must also include fast and accurate in producing answers within a short given time frame.. Just think: Some are real good in Math..but produce careless answers unintentionally..even gifted ones. Speed & accuracy in output.
Those courses ..i think ... can only train them so much. -
> Well, it's also real hard to say that all GEP kids are gifted just by one MCQ screening exam.
I did not use the word \"gifted\", I used the word \"good\". I always say that not all GEP kids are gifted, a lot of them are \"advance learning\". Please read my posting 1 month ago - I don't think GEP selection test is a fair game anymore. But GEP branch does not have much choice as this is the best way to select. Just like PSLE - can we say that a student is better than the other by one exam? Of course, there are still a lot of \"hidden\" gifted kids in mainstream. They can perform better than some GEP kids.
But until you have kids in GEP, then you will realize why your kid has to spend so much time on so many non-PSLE related work and projects? All these hard work are very time consuming and will not be reflected on PSLE result. It will be better to spend more time on doing PSLE related things or MO training right? Is this fair then? There are a lot of unfair things in the world. So don't keep saying that this is unfair and that is unfair, it does not help. I like the song Greatest Love of All - \"I believe children are future, teach them well and let them lead the way.\" All childrean are gifted / good in certain area. Give them the space and freedom to develope. Cheers ! :celebrate:
