NMOS 2011 - Special Round Results

Pen88n:
To be exact, if you are hoping to use Maths Olympiad to increase chance for DSA, NMOS has not much use in that case! Previously, if you had NMOS silver and above, you are invited to join in NUS High selection camp directly without having to go thru' any selection test. Nowadays, everyone goes for the same Maths and Sci tests, regardless of whether you have / do not have NMOS award! RI / HCI do not even consider NMOS award unless you are \"numbered\" among the top! This is based on my experience.
Yap, after reading those threads under DSA.... Only those top ones are being considered!!!
My DS has actually requested me to send him to Math Hub for the training when he tried 2010 paper. He's hoping he can do well in this paper, hoping this can help to increase his chance in DSA. However, I decided not to cos I told him it's already very good that he can get into 2nd round. Just tried his best. Now he's hoping he can get silver.....yukilei:

Your DS has already reach 2nd round, that is an achievement in itself. As long as your DS try his best, it is ok. Celebrate his effort, whatever is the outcome!
The truth is some of these Maths Olympiad questions really need certain \"talent\" and some kids are able to \"see it\" better than others. I know some kids with minimal training yet able to analyse and do better than others. They are just gifted in this area. -
Oh God!! Mommies, did you try the special paper yourself? DS wanted to pit against me.....so I tried the 2008 paper first few questions. :yikes: :faint:
Just 6 questions already took me 30 mins, how on earth to finish 20q in 90mins :nailbite:  and I got half of them wrong lor....... Didn't have the heart to continue liao......devastated
OK, no matter what DS come back with, I'm gonna :rahrah: :celebrate: Sometimes, we get too engrossed in all these awards and competitions that we forgot to :hugs: the kids for the good work and effort  -

Agreed, it is not easy. That's why I :udaman: to the kids that can do that and top the group. I remembered there was once DS asked me a question which he couldn't understand how to derive the answer. Took me a night to sleep over the question before I could figure it out. Showed to some of my mathematically strong colleagues and they were like \"wow....is that for primary school...huh?\"Oh God!! sama sama here.... we tried the 2010 paper 1st. I almost fainted. I couldn't even understand some of the solution. I've to read it on the train on my way to work.. then finally understand some of them. So, it take > 30mins to understand solution!!!!! :frustrated:Oh God!! btw if ur kids run out of nmos materials to try , can try the smops. Apparently the difficulty of nmos is approaching smops.

Thanks.....think I'll leave it for next year
My son only managed to try out 2006 & 2007. Both only managed 15q correct out of the 20q. So that's probably where he is ..... anyway not enough time too. No point pushing now .... can mean can, cannot means still cannot :boogie: Whatever it is, I have promised him his Terriyaki Chicken rice - his request for getting in special round
Maths Hub called me last week and asked whether I wanted to send my dd for the Special round training this week. I told her 'no' because dd is busy with swimming training as the National inter-school is just next week!
Thinking about it, I told my hubby, are we getting our priorities right? Huh? Swimming competition more important than Maths competition......
You did a right choice. If your DD does well in National Inter-school swimming competition, it may be \"worth\" more than the NMOS award when it comes to DSA. It is becoming very competitive nowadays that unless you are really amongst the top, the award is not much recognised!
Fortunately for the advice, else GONG GONG people like me actually thot NMOS is a big deal
But frankly, I have kinda given up the idea of DSA, think it's too taxing plus with only Maths competition awards, better not depend on it too much.....rather concentrate on PSLE T-score.
But DSA aside, still happy for DS to get into 2nd round......whatever he gets, it's an achievement (but of course.....still hoping for the best
greedy greedy kekeke
If your dd is very good in swimming, it's an easier path in to DSA. Swimmers who consistently get medals at Nationals get spotted by the DSA school coaches way before the DSA process. The parents are approached and their chances of CO are VERY high.
Conversely, there are hundreds of math whiz in Singapore vying for DSA places. It used to be that a Platinum or Gold would stand you in good stead. Now that's no longer a guarantee. -

Sorry, where do you get the papers to practice huh? Son blur blur got in and I did not let him try a single qn yet! He was surprised as he was called up for Math remedial in class. Haha! Only this mummy of his told him tt I always believe his math is very good, just lack practice for exposure, speed and accuracy since this mummy neglected him last yr as dd1 was taking psle.Oh God!!
