i think it is a virtuous cycle for good schools and vicious cycle for schools with so-so PSLE results.

that's why with new schools, the new P puts in extra effort cos it is a blank slate. if it produces less than sterling PSLE results, it will not be popular the very next yr for P1 reg. from then on, it could be a downward spiral.

within Jurong west, there are a handful of schools that are really popular and see balloting each yr. new parents waiting to enrol their kids in P1 start scouting for schools since their eldest is about 4-5yrs old cos of PV. They look at stats and surely will be attracted to the few popular ones.

They will queue to PV at those schools.

The more popular a school, the harder it is to get in, and hence the more a parent has to do to help his child get in. These parents tend to be those more actively involved and very concerned parents. (Not to say other parents in other schools are not, but most of those in the popular schools are.)

Hence, these parents would be those who constantly guide their children throughout the 6yrs and make sure their kids have a conducive environment etc to do their best. This is more than half the battle won.

Plus, many good students, those in the top few in the cohort in other Jurong schools all want to transfer in at upper levels and the few popular ones like Rulang can pick and choose the best of transfers. This would translate to even more high scorers at PSLE, if nothing goes wrong.

      It's a virtuous cycle.

For the other neighborhood schools, they have to see their best students leave, yr after yr, for GEP schools, for Rulang, etc... They can work very hard with the remaining students and there will be some who really shine, but the proportion will be less than the more popular schools, isn't it?

For Sec sch and JC, the situation is worse cos they take in base on merit, and of course the good gets better and better.

I'm just stating some facts, not to take any sides. Hope no one takes offence. 🙂

oh, i all the time thought Rulang is not a neighborhood school, i thought it was a 名校, btw, this morning i actually saw Rulang's school bus travel out of 2km skirt (somewhere near Pioneer Mall)

        Edureach,

does Rulang produce many GEP students - hence termed no. 1 neighbourhood school in terms of academics ? how do you define 'no. 1 neighbourhood school' ?

Is still a neighbouhood sch but a top one albeit its popularity. Its mean T-score is close to top pri schools. Go chk with the administration for more details.

In the past for the parents who did PV or in the earlier phases they might be staying > 2KM skirt so to cater them maybe the bus service is there...

As far as i know, the schoolbus caters to students who lived in west zone ( Jurong East/ West, Toh Guan, Bt Batok, CCK, Jurong West extension). In 2008, I PV-ed with 2 other parents ( and we were selected as PVs ) and our distance was outside of 2KM. We were the lucky ones who got our kids in.... I think they are still a neighbourhood school but the top neighbourhood school in Jurong area.
