2011 P1 Registration Exercise for 2012 In-Take

i disagree. right now for someone who is from say RGPS. whose grandmother and mother has been in rgps. and if she wants her daughter in future to go to rgps she has to make sure she makes it to rgps for the P1 registration. So she and her parents has to stay near rgps or else even if she get a place in rgps she has to put up with long travelling time.


Our minister of education mr heng swee kiat mentioned yesterday the 1st criteria is proximity for P1 registration. But for someone whose grandfather is from acps, himself from acps and wants his son to go to acps and hopefully his son’s son to go to acps in future what option does he has? he got no option really. either stay near bt timah or put up with long travelling time for his son. Else he has to break the family tradition.

why should this be so?

why are we scaring ourselves that having a school that is running out of vacancy if it were to have another 1 branch located elsewhere for the convenience of parents and students then all hell will break loose? the teachers and principals who run acps when it founded in 1886 till today are all different and of different calibre but the standard of acps is still there and the appeal is still there. from 1886 till today acps has many students. they are defintely not clones of one another.

no matter what MOE says a school set up today cant be compared to one set up 100 yrs or more ago. Why keep opening new schools only to close them in 10 to 20 yrs but then not allow schools that have long tradition from having branches. Try it if it doesnt work then go back to status quo. What is there to lose?

for a small place like spore do we need 200 over primary schools or can we have say 100 schools but then each of them having 2 campus?

Can register under Phase 2A(1) for P1 Registration. In case in future 2A(2) need to ballot.

I won't be surprised if this happens...some schools are facing high intake at 2A2 already.

but perhaps in future one day … combine with 2A(1), just form a simple 2(A).

and instead of being accused as ‘sleeping’ by some disgruntled people here, maybe everyone in 2(A) clock in some compulsory parent volunteering work contribution to the school … perhaps say, need to clock only 10 to 20 hrs (maximum), instead of 40 hrs. Normally there is a big group of 2A ex-alumni members coming back, if you check past statistics. So no need to clock 40 hrs so much.

if 2A ex-alumni members contribute back to the school by coming back as active parent volunteers for short hours (no more sleeping as been accused by some of you), then there is no need for P2B parent volunteers scheme anymore. P2B PVs will be abolished & scrapped.

I suspect P2B will be scrapped one day...given the unhappiness of PVs who chalked in hours and get balloted out. But where would the religious clans fall under then ?

currently in some schools, some 2A(1) members besides donating the $x one time alumni membership fees, some are very active and self lessly contributing much of their valuable time in school, even at the sacrifice of their precious family time (in case you are not aware). So pls do not think that all 2A(1) alumni members are sleeping.


currently, the nature of work done by 2A(1) members is different from that of 2B Parent volunteers work. Both sides contribute to the school, but in separate, different, meaningful ways. That is because do not wish to overlap into each other's area. The segregation of boundaries and duties between us are clear cut. Also P2B PVs got time limit, they need to clock up 40 hrs quickly, clear fast.

however since some of you in this forum accuse 2A ex alumni members as sleeping, not doing anything, while at the same time 2B PVs volunteer so much of their precious time, slot their tired lungs out, clock up hour by hour tediously, so tired and in the end, din even get in because dun even 'smell' the chance to ballot, just because stay beyond 1 km, din get what they want, in the end end up very frustrated. The way i see it ... perhaps one day in future, P2B PVs might be abolished.

if P2B PVs is scrapped, then the work they do will most likely be taken back by our 2A alumni members. The bonding to our alma mater primary school is very strong, since many of us spent 6 precious golden years there. It's where our roots are founded. So even if we are called back to contribute say 10 to 20 hrs each, i think 2A fellow alumni members won't mind - esp. when there is a calling from our alma mater that help is desperately needed. Extra pair of hands & effort will chip in readily.

nowadays, a number of schools also dun accept P2B PVs. Principal knows that demand always exceed supply. So they dun accept. Example: Maha Modhi.

other schools like SCGS only selectively hand pick those P2B PVs that possess highly specialized skills that the school wants. Many applied but got rejected, unless they possess the special skill that the school is looking for. so Yes they do accept P2B PVs, but only selectively very few ones.

regarding Clan associations:-

a) for Buddhist related schools like Maha Bodhi and Mee Toh, the temples pump in lots of money to build schools, build up and develop the name for the school over several long years. Without the financial backup and support from temple donations, the schools won't be where it is today.


b) for Methodist schools like ACS, MGS, same thing also.
The ACSians and MGS raised funds extensively to develop the schools, to support building classrooms, science labs & other building facilities. The Methodist church group also support financially greatly. Without strong ex-alumni parental support to raise funds, the schools also won't be where it is today.


c) for Hokkien clan - they also pumped in lots of $ to build the 5 affliated siblings schools like - Tao Nan, Kong Hwa, Ai Tong, Chongfu, Nan Chiau.

i not too sure from (a) to (c), on what criteria do they get their letters.
if you scrutinzie the criteria in detail, then can comment.

I am ex-alumni at Nanyang and have been an alumni for close to 7 years even though my first child is only 5 yrs old. I paid a hefty membership and definitely not $300 and have been an active member on a yearly basis. From time to time, there are donation requested on a yearly basis, perhaps is because I am an active member. Based on my rough calculation, I believe I have clocked close to 200hrs per years.

As for my DH who is an ex-alumni at ACPS. :evil: He only started being an almuni just 4yrs ago. Likewise, he also paid a hefty membership and it was $500....I think. He used to be an active member but this past 2 years he choose not to anymore because there are simply too many \"politics\". So he rather give more donation. But he was noti enough to get me involved in his ACS alumni. :stompfeet: Now I am running busy in both school. :yikes:

Actually there is no benefits to being an alumni member other than able to be in phase 2A1.

And yes you can choose to be a sleeping member and an active member. Popular school will not care a hoot whether you are a sleeping member as long as when they are asking for donation, you will be the first to approach lah.

if you are an active member, you know the knitty gritty details, in and out of what's going on inside the school, because you always receive useful first hand info tips. Some practical, down to earth useful, intangible benefits include:-


- how the teachers going to teach the subject curriculum,

- which teacher is good, popular, strict or fierce in marking,

- get to network & make friends with other parents whose kids studying in P1, P2. They can provide you useful info or tips on how to guide yr child, which important areas to focus on in academics, in CCAs, any other matter.

- also if you are active, your child tend to be better behaved in school, since they know that their mother is 'observing' them silently somehow, or other people may feedback to their mother readily if they do naughty things in school.

- also provide better communication channel & bonding between mom and child, since the mother knows in detail what's going on inside out and outside in happenings & events in school.
