I just want to add on.....eh just contributing eh.

I am ex-alumni at Nanyang and have been an alumni for close to 7 years even though my first child is only 5 yrs old. I paid a hefty membership and definitely not $300 and have been an active member on a yearly basis. From time to time, there are donation requested on a yearly basis, perhaps is because I am an active member. Based on my rough calculation, I believe I have clocked close to 200hrs per years.

As for my DH who is an ex-alumni at ACPS. He only started being an almuni just 4yrs ago. Likewise, he also paid a hefty membership and it was $500....I think. He used to be an active member but this past 2 years he choose not to anymore because there are simply too many \"politics\". So he rather give more donation. But he was noti enough to get me involved in his ACS alumni. :stompfeet: Now I am running busy in both school. :yikes:

Actually there is no benefits to being an alumni member other than able to be in phase 2A1.

And yes you can choose to be a sleeping member and an active member. Popular school will not care a hoot whether you are a sleeping member as long as when they are asking for donation, you will be the first to approach lah.

if you are an active member, you know the knitty gritty details, in and out of what's going on inside the school, because you always receive useful first hand info tips. Some practical, down to earth useful, intangible benefits include:-

        - how the teachers going to teach the subject curriculum,

        - which teacher is good, popular, strict or fierce in marking,

        - get to network & make friends with other parents whose kids studying in P1, P2. They can provide you useful info or tips on how to guide yr child, which important areas to focus on in academics, in CCAs, any other matter.

        - also if you are active, your child tend to be better behaved in school, since they know that their mother is 'observing' them silently somehow, or other people may feedback to their mother readily if they do naughty things in school.

        - also provide better communication channel & bonding between mom and child, since the mother knows in detail what's going on inside out and outside in happenings & events in school.

          laughingcat,

you dun have to run around 2 schools busily, since yr elder son eventually can only attend 1 school, need to choose between Nanyang or ACS.

though itโ€™s a dilemma bec both are good schools, but eventually still got to drop one.

Now it is not so much about getting in the school. It is my responsibility towards my "gals" and also I love my "job" at the alumni. Even if my DSs go to ACS, I still have my responsibility at my alumni as well.

I asked someone in alumni late last year regarding joining alumni to be more secure in getting a place for my daughter...she told me the principal isn't happy parents join the alumni for that reason...bcos most are sleeping members. Anyway, I missed the deadline of June...but managed to get daughter in the school under 2A2, since no money to give donations nor time to attend any functions.

Understand to be Nanyang alumni member, it's a one-time fee of $1000.
Hubby's friend didn't join alumni bcos he didn't have time to attend meetings.

If I remember correctly, last time was only $500 for life-time membership. They will ask you one practical question when you ring them, i.e. if it is for primary school registration purpose. Maybe in future will need to join to secure a place.

                    maybe 2A(2) not ballot.

but perhaps in future one day ... combine with 2A(1), just form a simple 2(A).

and instead of being accused as 'sleeping' by some disgruntled people here, maybe everyone in 2(A) clock in some compulsory parent volunteering work contribution to the school ... perhaps say, need to clock only 10 to 20 hrs (maximum), instead of 40 hrs. Normally there is a big group of 2A ex-alumni members coming back, if you check past statistics. So no need to clock 40 hrs so much.

if 2A ex-alumni members contribute back to the school by coming back as active parent volunteers for short hours (no more sleeping as been accused by some of you), then there is no need for P2B parent volunteers scheme anymore. P2B PVs will be abolished & scrapped.
If P2B PV is scraped, then there is no reason for grassroot to be there as they do not even contribute to the schools. The earlier phases will be retricted to alumni and clan members only and people who are not alumni or clan members will have no means of getting to the school unless they are within 1km and lucky to be balloted in.

PVs are informed there is no guarantee even after completing the hours chalked for a place...but still it's natural to have some expectations.
Phase 2A is for former students & children of staff in school as well as advisory members. Why is there a need for alumni ?

Education Minister tells parents to register in a school close to home, so that kids don't have to spend long hours on road...but not all staying within 1km of the school get a place...esp for HOT schools. There is this 2 balloting slips for Singaporeans now...bcos of the increase of PRs.

                        phtthp:
currently in some schools, some 2A(1) members besides donating the $x one time alumni membership fees, some are very active and self lessly contributing much of their valuable time in school, even at the sacrifice of their precious family time (in case you are not aware). So pls do not think that all 2A(1) alumni members are sleeping...

Dear phtthp & laughingcat, I think you posts support my earlier post that it is not fair for parent who are ex-student to qualify under P2A2. For parents like yourself who paid and contribute greatly in terms of time as ex-alumni members, you deserve the preference, not those freeriders!!!
