That would be me. The school does give out the number of applicants at each distance, i.e <1km, 1 to 2 and more than 2km. But they do not breakdown how many applicants in each distance group are citizens and PRs. I had asked for that breakdown to better calculate my chances cos citizens have 2 chances

              g2m6:
It all boils down to a matter of demand and supply. This year Ai Tong has 38 vacaniesy while Horizon Pri has 277 vacancies after Phase 2A2. Both offered 330 vacancies in 2012. The average vacancies (AV) for the 10 schools with the least number of vacancies after P2A2 is 46.4 while the AV for the 10 schools with the most number of vacancies 206.6. This despite the 10 schools having the least number of vacancies left offered a total of 150 more vacancies for 2012 than the 10 schools with the most vacancies left.

There is no problem in the overall vacancies in primary schools. Problem is there is a gross unequal distribution of these vacancies amongst the schools due to demand.

So why bother opening up new schools with a brand new name that no one wants to register when you can let (or force) schools that consistently fail to meet demand annually eg Raffles Girls (82 left after P2A2) or Anderson Primary (64 left after P2A2) to open up another campus. This school will follow the same system as the original one and some of the senior teachers and staff can be transferred over to the new school and replicate the successful model.

No danger of cookie cutter because we do not eliminate all schools but just let those which always fail to meet demand increase their intake.
Wow...what big difference in vacancies available!
I live in Bishan, I cant possibly send my sonny to Horizon! So I really dont know if there are THAT MANY 2005 kids around that estate (ie <1km range). From what I see from the map, there are not that many... but I dont know where these ppl are from and why parents want their kids to spend time travelling come school reopens.... it is very disheartening and stressful for parents like me.... schools within walking distance cannot get.... sigh :stompfeet: :frustrated:

I wonder do the other schools give out the number as well. Did they pin it on the board, or you have to keep asking them?

I share your frustrations completely. Check out the Ai Tong thread and you will realise that some parents who are ex-AT are staying as far as Tampines and are putting their kids at AT. I know that is their entitlement but still....

Chooz, have u decided where to register your kid?

It's the same in all areas. I'm in Clementi and all the good schools around here like Nan Hua, Henry Park, Nanyang, Pei Hwa are also all taken up by former students who live far from here. Then what's left for us? I also enrolled at ATS cos I'm from there but have withdrawn because I feel the travelling will be too much once they move to their holding campus.

Such is the system and we're all trying to work within it, using whatever favourable status we have to enjoy a priority registration.

If parents feel that it's worth it for their children to travel more than an hour to get to school every day then it's up to them. Can only lament why our parents didn't send us to one of these popular schools back in our day.

mummyo, perhaps this is the reason why despite the long distance parents are still not willing to give up registering their kid at these popular schools bcos they dun want their children to lament about them not putting them in the popular schools like wat u r doing now šŸ˜‚
