Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
-
3Boys:
Just wondering, wouldn't most have a \"free pass\" at Phase 2A if they are Singaporean/PR and have studied in Singapore as a child? Unless their former school closed down. Even if their former school merged with others to form a new school, they can still register under Phase 2A for the new school. I read in another thread that former students of Ang Mo Kio North (which merged to become today's Anderson Primary) qualify to register under Phase 2A for Anderson Primary.mummy168:
Precisely.Totally illogical. This is a national primary school admission system and there is such a glaring GAP in the system. MOE keeps emphasing that home proximity rule will apply when demand exceeds supply from 2A onwards. But in reality, home proximity rule can never be applied in 2A else there will be NO 2B/C. Too bad for those aspiring to get into the school. Your mummy and daddy didn't study here, so you never gonna get a chance as school has insufficent vacancies even to cater to offsprings of old boys and girls.

The current squash on 2B/2C spaces is directly due to preferential admission in 2A, which basically amounts to a free pass based on Daddy's/Mummy's old connections, regardless of whether he/she was a sleeping member of the school population until graduation at PSLE. That, in my view, is the greatest injustice of all of this, and the most illogical, more than selection for PV, more than home-school distance.
One issue that is often mentioned in this forum is distance from one's former primary school. In which case, one also has a choice of uprooting and moving closer to their former primary school to cut travelling time. Or, stay put and have one parent/grandparent expend time and effort to chauffeur the child to and from school. Or the child has to spend time in travelling. Either way, there are choices (though some not as convenient) if one wants to register in Phase 2A.
In my humble opinion, I personally do not think that Phase 2A is unfair, because (unless I am missing something) most have the opportunity to register in Phase 2A. -

Phase 2A makes no sense. It is not based on contributions, it is not based on affiliations to organisations with shared values, and it is not based on home-school distance. You don't do alumni preference for secondary schools, JC or university, so why do it for Primary school?

Is the whole premise of education based on social mobility? What mobility is there if parents are locked into sending their children ONLY to the school where they were previously alumni, or otherwise endure the lottery of Phase 2B onwards?
As it is, for some of the popular schools, the take up rate is already past 60% after Phase 2A, leaving scraps for the rest. Why this impediment which only serves to solidify class division and exclusivity? -
The fairest system is to have a Primary One Entrance Exam for all registering for Pri 1 and use the same posting system as the S1 to do the Pri 1 posting.
Afterall every kid is SG goes to kindergarten....and MOE just need to ensure there is uniform exam for end of K2......

Agreed on the views mentioned on Phase2A, how about phase 2B? Any comments on this phase? -

if this comes to pass, parents better pray for a smarter firstborn so the siblings behind can enjoy that pass....or is it everyone will have to take the exam and parents will have to tear their hair out coordinating the logistics for kids in different schools? :faint: -
hquek:
based on what some people posted on this ksp, there will be no sibling advantage, so every one is based on merit, to be fair, this is \"married to crazy\" (meritocracy)
