The ratio of the amount of money Jenny had to the amount of money Siti had was 3:4. The next day, their parent gave each of them some money. Siti received twice as much as Jenny. The ratio then became 5:8. If both girls had a total of $70 at first, how much did Siti receive?

I dont get the part on the receive from parents. Why must 1u+6 multiply by 8 and why 10u + 40 = 8u +48? Appreciate your reply soon. Tks

I have provided the solution for the ratio question. As for the overlapping squares, I can't confirm the configuration so I am not able to provide the solution. If the diagram is such that the small square is inside the medium square and the medium square is inside the big square, then the shaded area is 12/25 or 48% of the big square.

Jenny and Siti received money in the ratio of 1:2 = 5 units : 10 units
Originally, Jenny had 30, Siti had 40

So, total that Jenny had = 5 units + 30 = 5 x (1 unit + 6) --- (A)
total that Siti had = 10 units + 40 ---- (B)

Also given is : after receiving the money from their parent, the ratio becomes Jenny : Siti = 5 : 8

From (A), 1 share = 1 unit + 6, so 8 shares = 8 x (1 unit + 6) = 8 units + 48

so, (B) becomes 10 units + 40 = 8 units + 48

medium square : big square = 3 : 5

equalize the shares for medium square and we have

small square : medium square : big square = 3u : 15u : 25u
shaded area is medium square - small square = 15u - 3u = 12u
total area = 25u (basically area of big square)

So, shaded area = 12u/25u = 48%

a) How many more picture cards did Peiqin have in the end?
b) How many pitcure cards did both of them have in all?

a)
Azmi= 1u
Peiqin=3u+28

2u=28
1u=14
3u+28=3x14+28=56 picture cards

b) 4u+28=84 picture cards

Part a) is correct but for part b) the answer sheet shows 112? Appreciate help on part b) pls. Tks

Work backwards to get to the initial number.

Steps:
Quantity Left ---- Quantity Bought
Initial ---- 1st: ½ Initial + 8

½ initial–8=R1 ---- 2nd : 45% of R1 + 5

55% of R1-5=R2 ---- 3rd: 70% of R2 + 3

30% of R2- 3 = 12

work backwards,

30% of R2 = 15, R2 = 15/3 x 10 = 50

55% of R1 – 5 = R2 = 50, R1 = 55/55 x 100 = 100

½ initial -8 = R1 = 100, Initial = 108 x 2 = 216
