Yes Academically, Pei Hwa is a Pressure Cooker. But Which Other Sch in Spore who Excel Academically in Spore is Not?
But so far I have not heard T Behaviour as per your description ....
Yup, PH is no-nonsense on discipline & extremely academically focused. IMHO, for parents whose kids need to be gentler, slower paced and less stressful environment, this sch is not for them.

However having said that, I'm grateful that my ds is fortunate enough to be studying there. He has matured a lot in a space of a few mths, not just academically, but holistically. I believe the sch environment plays a big part.
Maybe Some other Hands-on Parents with P1, P2 Kids can Take up the Case ....
Honestly speaking...it's either we are blessed with very nice teachers or PH is just letting us enjoy our honeymoon period in P1 first...ds finds all his teachers \"nice\"...even though he says there's a maths teacher who's fierce...but when he spoke of her...there was no fear...so i guess the teacher is strict and reasonable...and as for his EL teacher..i found her a super nice lady as well....so hvn't encountered any \"tigresses\" as yet.

So I'm bracing myself for the \"upper primary\" pressure that's due to come our way :nailbite: ....but will take one step at a time la...

i am a firm believer in strict discipline for kids and this was the reason why i chose PHPPS over another popular school. so teacher shouting \"don't care\" or \"shut up\" will definitely not drive me crazy....

i helped in various school events and i noticed that the classes with a strict FT are more disciplined and well mannered whereas the classes with more lenient FT are normally quite rowdy. As parents, we always take for granted and feel that it is an easy job to control 30 kids in a class but normally it turns out not as simple as what we have thought. The teachers are just doing their job to instil discipline...In P1, all the notorious kids from P1 classes were listed by their respective FTs and they have to attend classes under the supervision of the strictest teacher in PH....

If you know the history of PH, the school started as a Chinese school and now a SAP school. Discipline is one of the most important value of eastern culture. Like markfch's ds, my dd is definitely more well disciplined and well behaved now than before she entered PH...So i am very thankful to the school and her teachers for instilling the right values in her.

My ds is one of the crying children u saw at e back gate ๐Ÿ˜œ but i must say fault lies w my childโ€™s personality rather than the T. The teachers n school office were vsupportive in helpin my son get over his anxieties. I also prefer a disciplined environment for my child, i canโ€™t stand rudeness or rowdiness, so i m v happy w my choice of school. The teacher even called the night before school reopen to encourage him, n let him know that she is lookin forward to see him. I was v touched n i know my ds felt much better abt sch too

While my expectations of his results r not as high as the teacherโ€™s, i feel assured that the sch has a good system to push him to do his best.

Hi there, I am a returning Singaporean currently residing in Sydney, my son been in the primary school system here which is definitely more relaxed academically than in spore. Children here are also very disciplined but teachers would not say" shut up" or shout at students in general, there are merits to a more relaxed system like this but since we are going back and trying for pei hwa to ballot for phase 2c, I was wondering now if pei hwa would be too much of a culture shock to him and us? Or perhaps we should go for another less challenging school and secure a place like BTPS? Because for that probably no balloting needed. Any thoughts? Thanks

PH is a school which strongly believes in discipline...I've heard of this before I registered my son and now that he's in P5, I can vouch for the strict teachers.
This year, he's blessed with good teachers...esp Math and Chinese. His Math teacher emails parents regularly with updates (what she is teaching and will be going to teach). Isn't that amazing ? :rahrah:
At times, I know what homework she gives even b4 my son returns home. I LOVE IT !!!

Hi Sxm10109, I am sure your ds will experience a little cultural shock no matter which school he enrols in. However, kids adjust very quickly, especially if your ds is a gregarious one (I assume). ๐Ÿ˜‰

I would say the standard of PH is higher than many pri schools here, esp Higher Chinese. Nonetheless, there are true examples of kids who excelled over time in this subject. One sista's dd here can share but she'll be leaving us soon. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kids have to learn to be resilient. Every school has their dedicated, passionate, mediocre and \"not-so-good\" teachers, this includes Pei Hwa. The one example you read about that teacher at the backgate was definitely not showing an exemplary behaviour. I agree with php that strict discipline is good and effective but there are many ways of exercising that to the children. Shouting, condescending and losing control are not ways to good discipline. Therefore, do not let one of such examples discourages you. When registering a child to a pri school here, there are many factors to consider. Besides hoping that there are good teachers, the discipline of the school, the curriculum, the culture, and belief are also considerations. You've read that many parents had gone thru, or will go thru extremes to enrol their kids to Pei Hwa, so that would say alot about the school.

My dd1 is P3. For the past years, she had experienced all kinds of teachers. However, none of the \"not-so-good\" ones, I would say, took away her joy in studying in PH. In fact, for those teachers who are passionate, she learns, not just academically, but about values and life skills from them too.

Just my 2-cents. ๐Ÿ˜„

boys-mummy:

:yikes: There is a interprimary school swimming competition and PH is participating??? How is thisa possible when they dont even have a swimming as CCA??? My son swims competitively at APS swimming school and I was hoping he would join the school team but was very disappointed!! :slapshead:

Hi boys-mummy,
If There is an Inter-sch Sports events that is Not offered as CCA by the Sch, U can still Registered your Boy in the Event, representing the sch.

But U Need to Visit the Primary Sch Sports Page, keep in contact with the sch to let them know (Maybe Drop a Note to the Head of CCA, Mr Tan Leng Koon), or Even ask your boy's swimming Coach to keep U inform of the Registration Date, etc.

My Gal's Gym Mate represented Pei Hwa in Artistic Gym this Year (though the Sch Disbanded the CCA last year) and the Boy's Artistic Gym has been doing that for Years ....

Actually there R other Sports talent within Pei Hwa that R Lesser known.
Manny Lesser known Sports talent abound in Pei Hwa.
I have read of a P5 (Or P6? Can't Recall ....) Pei Hwa Gal going for Inter-National Golf Competitions (and Winning Many Events), and Another P6 Gal who has Won in Tennis Competition in S'pore.

So even if the Sch does not offer the CCA your son specialised in, U Could still rep the Sch.
:celebrate: :celebrate:

Boys-mummy, there was an announcement in school those interested please go get the form from the GO (I think) but my girl missed that and we wrote to ask Mr Tan if he could help us sign up (cos only school can e-sign up). Then we were surprised that there were a total of 9 swimmers in PH and all are quite good.
Yes, there's no school team. Anyway, I think it's better to swim with good coaches in proper swim school. More kids of the same age group together will create more competition during training...
Don't worry, next year any competition I pm you.... ๐Ÿ˜„

I am a parent who believes in discipline, but teachers shouting and losing their temper is rather hard to accept. Kids must be afraid of authorities, esp boys. BTW, I've learnt to let go where my son's homework is concerned, bcos I know he is answerable to his teachers. In doing so, he learns to be independent and responsible for his actions.

The standard in Pei Hwa is high and this school is known to be academic driven. Kids need to learn to be resilient...in the process of coaching our kids in their education path, we parents are also learning this skill ๐Ÿ˜‰
