roti is malay for bread. our ancestors in Sg mixed very well with their malay neighbours and so sg dialect is quite a mixture. most Sgp will just say \"lor-ti\" for bread, whayever dialect.
that's why when Taiwanese listen to our Hokkien, they don't understand.
Dh says when he went to China with his parents, and they (all teochew) spoke in Teochew to relatives there, they couldn't understand my in laws too. apparently Dh thinks \"bah-ru\" is \"just\" or \"new\" in legit teochew! But it is from Malay \"baru\"= new.
He always says \"bah-ru lai\" meaning, you just come is it?
