That was our experience for dd1 when we applied to Fairfield Methodist and were informed next day to withdraw application (o/s 1km and registration exceeded vacancies) to try a nearer school (which happened to be HPPS)

Though we only applied on last day of P2C, registration was still accepted since we were within 1km (and yes, we were successful in balloting 6yos ago)

I can only remember the stress and anxiety for first-time registering parents esp for P2C. I had plan B, C... all the way to Z;p, if we had not been successful anywhere. Its an emotional time and I did not want to caught unprepared when feeling vulnerable.

My first two children had been blessed with good teachers most of the years. Not stellar results but good learning opportunities.

So your kids have graduated from HPPS? Where are they now? Do you know where most HPPS children go after P6? tks

Not sure if you directed the above to me- sssdarlings. I think the Orange belt is my level or something... and I did not write the encouraging reply above either...i guess i got the quote stuff muddled up.

anyway, regarding to secondary schools after HPPS- only if you are in the top classes (non- GEP), you can be quite sure of good secondary schools (by that i mean with only express streams)

Many of neighbours children graduated from HPPS. And out of about 8 or so I know, only one went to Crescent and another recently to NUS High and the rest were nearby secondary schools (Queenstown sec, St Theresa, Fairfield Methodist, Clementi Town, Kent Ridge etc)

I know many go to NJC as well... and from what I have found, these students were all from the top tier classes.

Oh yes, the school is pretty transparent about class grouping and ability banding. In fact my dd's class was encouraged to aim for the top class in primary 2... banding starts from P3. No, HPPS does not have 'streaming tests' during orientation. Its genuinely a school orientation for children who get to know their form teachers and classmates.

Subject banding is from P5, in preparation for PSLE. I had mentioned that mostly top class students go to 'better' secondary schools. That is not to say that there is any lack of good teachers/ quality teaching in the remaining classes. My dd has always been in the middle- ability classes and she has been taught well throughout the years. She never had to struggle much for the challenging math questions, yes they are tough to solve but the school has taught them methods to use. Very well structured lessons, most of the time at least.

Regarding coping with 'enriched children'- its really about managing our expectations as other parents have shared with me. I read in another post about being realistic about children's abilities. Of course it is also important to stretch their potential. EVen though the school wins numerous awards, its about being in the right class/ CCA etc. Only gripe is that its movie-time after examinations ;<

I never stressed my children much, neither have I felt stressed with the homework and enrichment.

I'm more concerned with my kids getting an all rounded education and not just be academically driven.

yes, an all-rounded education is the ultimate goal but sometimes you are always second-guessing yourself cos of the choices you make (my children dont go for swimming/ music etc etc etc but will be climbing tree and blowing bubbles at SBG ;)) And when you see other children scoring As and winning awards... self-doubt creeps in and you wonder if you are depriving your children :scratchhead:

Anyway, my youngest will be in P1 next year... hope this cohort is blessed as well! ;D
