Can anyone explain how the figure for 2b in some schools is bigger than the figure in 2c… I thot the number of seats for 2b and 2c shld be 50-50.

Hi Tia. It could be the case of a withdrawal during phase 2B. The seat in that case will go to phase 2B first as I understand. A second withdrawal will go to phase 2C in that order. It could also be a case of a pair of twins being selected for the last slot during phase 2B balloting, in which case both will go through at the expense of a slot from 2C. On a related note, you will also see some instances of phase 2C slots exceeding that of phase 2B. This was my understanding.

I was at TN at around 3pm, saw 80 vying for 47 places. Decided to stick with NA

Anyone notice that NA results have been deteriorating over the past few years, while TKPS seems to be on the up? Not sure why NA is the backstop to TN.

Just to share, my DS has a place in Ngee Ann. And I have many friends staying in the area whose kids go to each of the three schools - Tao Nan, Ngee Ann and Tanjong Katong so I have firsthand feedback on these schools.


While Tao Nan is undoubtedly the best school, the stress and competition is real. The high standard of Chinese which involves reciting Chinese poetry and frequent ‘pop quizs’ as a form of assessment in lieu of exams caused parents much stress esp for those from English speaking families. You need to be prepared to put in as much as effort as the child to help them keep up. Not all kids thrive in this environment.

I chose Ngee Ann over Tanjong Katong because it is run by the Ngee Ann Kongsi and emphasize on Chinese culture which I hope will be beneficial to my son in mastering Chinese. But there is a lack of wide variety of CCA compared to Tao Nan and Tanjong Katong. I heard Ngee Ann also push the kids to take up Chinese orchestrate etc CCAs they want to excel in - which may not be very kid’s interest.

My friends’ feedback on Tanjong Katong is that P1 and P2 is very relax not much homework. But they up the ante in P3 and many kids are unprepared. This suggests a lack of planning in pacing and calibrating the work. Though some may feel this helps the kids make the transition into primary school.

Overall, PSLE results of Tanjong Katong and Ngee Ann are comparable. Ngee Ann 2009 results were quite good while Tanjong Katong 2010 results
also quite good. By and the large the results are rather consistent so let’s not take any one year results and view them in isolation.

Hope this helps parents have a better perspective of the pros and cons of these schools.
