Review of Secondary/IP Schools

Jennifer:
Congrats! Not NUSHigh, hopefully they hv not started calling successful applicants which wld mean #1 still has hopes.
ACS(I) called this afternoon twice. First time, she introduced herself, then asked if I am Mrs Wong, then said she needed to speak to the P first, later wld call me back. I asked why, she said she saw a mistake. My heart dunno want to drop or not since she did not say we were successful. Mins later, she called and said #1 was successful and asked if we are free this Fri afternoon to meet the P. Now I am left wondering what was the mistake :stupid:
Wld we be \"forced\" to accept the offer on the spot? Or can wait till NUSHigh sent out notifications?
If your son is good in English and can express himself well, then I think the IB programme will suit him well. IB programme is broad-based while 'A' levels is \"specialised\" and goes indepth into the 4 subjects that the student is studying. I remember the Principal saying that ACS(I) has the best IB results among the IB schools in the world. If my memory serves me rightly, this year's results were pretty good and more than 60% of the cohort is able to apply to Cambridge, Oxford and the like.
I don't think they can \"force\" you to accept on the spot cos they have to follow MOE guidelines, and that is, acceptance of DSA offers will be between 26-30 Oct 09 (according to MOE's press release). -
Thanks all for the congrats. I just read the other post that ACS(I) DSA can be IP or ‘O’ levels. I think we ticked both in the form, now I don’t recall the admin staff telling me which one we are successful. Hm, gotta call her tmr to confirm first.
#1 is more keen on NUSHigh. only agreed to try DSA at ACS(I) for exposure. Don’t hammer me ok? -
HI GREENBELT
Congrats !
I’m new…
What I know is that ACSI and HCI has both indicated to parents to inform them if they are not taking up their confirmed offers. This is so they can release these places to those on waiting list. And those who just miss the waiting list, to go on the waitlist.
Although the MOE process does not require parents to do this or to indicate their decision at this point, it is appealing to the goodwill and kindness of parents n students who are already very sure which offer they want.
So on behalf of parents of children waitlisted or not offered, I appeal to parents to do that. It means alot to some of these pupils. For non-GEP academic applicants the offers are very limited after considering GEP, sports talents, music talents, Maths Olympiads, etc. It is not that they are not good enough, but many seats are taken by the same students.
Thank you, the lucky parents out there! -

You are probably referring to \"Jennifer\". GREENBELT shows the \"seniority\" of the person in terms of the number of posts he/she has made in this forum.

Agree with kirakira. Many GEP students are offered confirmed places in at 2-3 schs. Majority of my dd’s classmates have at least 2 offers. Hence it explains why Ps of NYGH, HCI and ACS(I) have to appeal to the goodwill of parents and students to inform them if they are not taking up the offers.
My dd only applied for 1 sch despite the kiasu mum asking her to try for another. Her reasoning was she did not want to give up her dream of getting into her 1st choice. If she was not accepted then she would study hard for PSLE and get in via PSLE results. She would only consider her 2nd choice if she failed to make it after PSLE. Fortunately, she was offered a confirmed place for her only DSA sch.
After reading the various posts, it makes me wonder if DSA is making parents and students more stressful than before when one only needed to worry after PSLE. -
Have any parents thought of this question ? What happen if the kids are not scoring good \"A\" level results to get into local Uni or to get into the course they want. What other options are there for these IP students ? :?

hi daisyt,
I have never thought of this leh. Don't think there will be any difference between IP and non-IP students in this situation. all of them need the good A level result to enter the hot courses of the local Uni,right? Other than that perhaps can try overseas via other exam results?
wow, still have 5 years to go, you already start to plan already.. -
Hi chengsmummy, actually you are quite correct hor. IP or non IP in this situation, they are the same. I am thinking at least non IP still have O level certs mah. But start to think more indept, O level cert is nothing nowadays. OK ... I admit, I think too much.
I just google and seem that Polys also accept 'A' level students.
So my conclusion, the options are
1) Go poly with the A level results, at least can get the course we want but waste 1 year
2) Re-take A level for the subjects not good at, then combine the certs the next year apply Uni. Can ?
3) Go overseas
4) Take course from private Uni here -
chengsmummy:
So long as you don't fail, I think the \"not so good\" \"A\"-level results can still qualify for some Poly courses, if that's what you are thinking. These kids won't have any 'O'-level results to fall back on.daisyt:

But I do believe that the IP schools should have a system to identify those who cannot cope with full IP program and get them to switch to 'O'-levels before the 4th year.
