Hi, my girl is in k2 this yr and cfm no spelling test for both English n Chinese. According 2 my girl, they hv not yet start on maths as well as han yu pin yin. As such, I enrol her in Mavis tutorial for p1 preparatory class n Beijing language class.
tt's what the teacher told me. I think Primary school has spelling but not sure about the syllabus.happymom08:
Hi micollh
Oh,,u mean their k1/k2 no spelling at all huh,,,hmm,,,then i am worried,,,cos Pri 1 also need to noe spelling rite?...does ur DD noe how to spell any words??. even after the literacy thing??
my DD is learning to read now, picking up. The literacy is not meant to spell. it's for them to recognise words and then know how to use the words in sentences. -

Is it something we should worry about ? no spelling? no maths(i need to check with DD teacher on this, as from the 3 mthly updates, they are being introduced maths concepts) -

that will be extra $$ for me....sigh,,,, -
MFS does not have english/chinese spelling not even han yu pin yin. They only teach "sheng mu" as I understand and do not emphasize on pin yin.
My son learnt phronics in nursery (but later part of the year). Actually different centre offers different curriculum. EVen littleskoolhouse which is under the same parent company does not offer spelling as well though they are comparable with cherie hearts or other premium schools.
I am not sure if other child care of comparable school fees like MFS gives spelling/han yu pin yin. As my friends alway say, you pay peanut you get peanut. -

hmm,,,since my first skool does not do spelling for eng/chinese...will it affect the kids when they go pri 1??....MFS does not have english/chinese spelling not even han yu pin yin. They only teach \"sheng mu\" as I understand and do not emphasize on pin yin.

If I can recall, they hv introduced basic counting for maths in beg of this yr. After being told by her teacher on their curriculum for this yr, I decided to enroll her for extra lesson in Mavis tutorial ctr where they prepared these kids for P1 next yr. They hv given spelling test (10 words) every week and also assessment for maths. The syllabus fr MFS is not comparable. I afraid tat by not providing her with add. Classes, she may lag behind others in P1 next yr.
I understand tat the teaching method fr MFS may not be the same as some ctr which they are adopting learning thru play in a relaxing environment for kids. -

ok thanks. yes, i agree on that. it's not enough from what they learnt in MFS alone. tt's why enrichment classes can supplement on that. just that we need to know what to supplement.

If we want, each day give 1 word for our child, by the 5th day, total of 5 words. then do a spelling test with him on the next Monday. if can write already, then ask them write the 5 words. start slow. this will help in the spelling portion also.
maths wise, i thk better send them for classes as the foundation is important. at home, just ensure they know the numbers and simple addition -

I believe building gd foundation in languages is essential for entering P1. For maths, if the kid is able 2 understand the logic of addition n subtraction, i believe this shld be sufficient. I think the most difficult subject is Chinese where it consists of accuracy writing (pi hua) n hypy.
