Opinions of the Primary School Registration System

verykiasu2010:
Citizen population includes many senior citizens. Not many PRs are in this category. In fact, I would say most have school going children.citizen population is about 3 million plus
PR population is about 0.5 million
so the ratio of PR is about 1:7
I am amazed at how these 1/7 suddenly becomes the cause of over-subscription for Pri 1 places. It is not as if these 0.5 million suddenly appeared from nowhere. PR population has been around 0.3m and 0.4 m for a long time already. The squeeze in MRT and public transport are largely foreign workers who have no families here. Those domestic workers and work permit holders (construction workers / factory operators / domestic helpers etc) numbering a million plus has no family no children here. -

Available seats in all schools total 41,500. There are some schools like Bedok West Primary School only has 25 students registered for 180 seats. Not even enough to form one class... So is this a case where we are simply just too choosy and complain when we do not get what we want....
Do you expect parents in phase 2C to send their kids there if they don't stand a chance in the nearest school and stay in the west?
Bearing in mind that Phase 2C parents are vying for a place in the nearest schools.
Your comment is more suitable for those under the earlier phases, esp the alumni. However, is of no use cos these groups of people don't need to ballot. -
yeah... I'd better move across the causeway in my old age... otherwise have to fight for nursing home space as well as... a place to house my ashes after i pass on.
benten2011, ERP must compete?? You fight to go through the gantry first is it

surprised to see MGS having a breakdown of SG and PRJust take a look at this - 30% of applicants under 1 km for MGS are PRs

Maybe there is some rationale to cap the number of PRs registering at each phase to 15 to 20%. They should ballot to get into the ballot! -
Scary:
That's exactly the point. There is a blind spot in the statistics. we know there is a low birth rate however the number of registrants seem to be higher. The question is how many PR's out there with young family?? I'm sure there are loads if you look around. And i strongly doubt we are dishing out PR's to senior citizens. And there must be more than 500k PR's out there. What about those that converted to citizens. Young new citizens with familys? Hence i think there is an indirect pressure on the numbers from foreigners. :rahrah:

Honestly speaking, I think this system sucks.... If I have got the moolahs, high chance is i will send my kid to overseas as international student to study instead of staying here... Since it does not matter if I am a SG citizen or PR, also do not have any exclusive priority...
errr... I have a SG friend in UK.. it isn't that easy as having moolah. The good schools conduct home visits to check the living environment, you need to do PV as well and whether your \"background\" is good enough.
I can only say, my friend is more stressed than I am... -
I think the issue is not a shortage in the number of vacancies per se, but a shortage in the number of vacancies in popular schools. Human beings go by herd instincts. If a school is oversubscribed, then it must be a good school, vice versa. This shortage is aggravated by PRs who, listening in to the grapevine, also want to send their children to these same schools.
Given this, the government can perhaps look into having more classes (ie building schools with bigger compounds) at these popular schools and shutting down the unpopular ones. -
ngsc23, I think it's a great idea!
Let the PRs and foreigners fight it out in 2C1, after locals are done.
I wonder if Mr Heng and his pple are listening?? :frustrated:
Jas007, what can be done to ensure local catholics or anglicans get a fair chance at mission schs is to bar PR and foreigners from P2B. Then use your method of differentiating between the 2 groups of PRs and foreigners, to make it fair for everyone.

I was just thinking about the suggestions that Phase 2a be tweaked/removed/merged with other phases etc. For all those in support of limiting alumni 'advantage', you do realise that your grandchildren will not get to benefit from your slogging as PVs, etc, to get into that coveted school, should these proposed changes happen some day?

Further, if proximity is going to come into play, maybe one should snap up a choice piece of land today, build a solid house to last for generations and make sure your kids, grandkids and desendants can root there for as long as the school stays in that location...
Btw, i was talking to a friend from a certain ministry recently about phase 2a1 and 2a2. He made a point about the existence of 2a2. Do you guys know that there are schools without any alumni associations? Hence the ex-students can only qualify under 2a2. Maybe that's why the provision is drafted in this inclusive manner? Of course, those who don't benefit from 2A will say, so what, why should we cater to this group..
Anyway, I informally presented to him some suggestions about changes to the system, gleaned from this forum. Who knows, maybe in the next few years we'll see some of your ideas implemented!
