Opinions of the Primary School Registration System
-
ASAP:
Agreed!
:salute: Very well said and workable solution, Please upload to MOE Minister Facebook for his attention. :xedfingers:phtthp:
the correct P1 registration education policy solution should be :-
- let all fellow Singaporeans compete amongst ourselves, all the way from Phase 1 to 2C. This is called 'SINGAPOREAN Phase 1 to 2C'
- let all PRs compete amongst themselves in a newly Created PR Phase; inside also got Phase 1 to 2C. But give it another name called 'PRs Phase 1 to 2C'.
but not to compete with SG born citizens, please.
We must distinguish clearly!
- let all foreigners compete amongst themselves in a newly Created Foreigner Phase. Call it another new name, 'Foreigner Phase 1 to 2C'.
as to the limited vacancies in Popular schools, let MOE receiving high pay Ministers and ministry solve this problem.
instead of letting so many primary schools lying around the whole of SG with such poor low student enrolment (some can't even form 1 class properly), MOE to figure out how best to improve or entice students to enter these schools. This way, will serve all the needs of parents from (SG phase, PR phase, Foreigner Phase).
there is no impossible solution. it's whether they want to come together, brainstorm for solutions how to go about implementing feasible solution, or at least test out for pilot run to see.

After all, that Singaporean kid or her father sacrifices 2 yrs of his life serving NS. Some recognition at P1 is not too much to ask for, compared to the PR kids who will enjoy the privilege of no NS.
Perhaps an MP should bring this suggestion up in the upcoming parliament session. -
Mod's Note
Dear All
Chill please !!
Please focus on the topic and not each other. There will be differences in opinion, please do accept this fact, try to see from other's point of view.
If you can't agree with them, then agree to disagree. Do not get personal.

Yes, we shouldn't take away people's right to rent, but there are indeed people who rent to be within 1km of their choice school and moving out of that 1km radius after 2 years, or even 1 year, once their children are in the school. It would be impossible for the school to track every child's address for the entire 6 years. So someone's suggestion earlier where consideration is given to the length of stay at a particular address prior to registration (and I think it is from verykiasu2010) is probably a better alternative.a) Loads of PR's rent properties. Not everyone owns properties in Singapore. How you going to stop PR's from renting?
b) Once again with property prices sky rocket high lots of younger families may even resort to renting down the road. So we going take their right away here as well for renting within 1km? -
Jas007:
you were shortlisted bcos u mentioned washing sweet potatoes as a PV
The ST reporter definitely asked the WRONG person...my son is already in P5 !!! The day I washed 6 cartons of sweet potatoes with 2 other mummies for 5 hours are over...hahaha. The reporter should ask PVs wannabe what they are willing to do as PV in the name of love.janet_lee88:
the ST reporter got hold of you, wrong person. your girl already in P2 now.
reply this ST reporter - she should be interviewing eager parent volunteers instead, who are trying to enrol their kid very hard into hot schools next year !
perhaps no one else mentioned they'd just done PV for this year ...
or perhaps reporter scared he stepped on a landmine as in the PV he'd chosen is one who was unsuccessful for a slot in that school ... and now might take opportunity to let off steam ...
you seemed the best option then since u are pretty obliging and active in here ... most sensible choice i suppose
just curious, do PVs actually serve all 40 hours ?
in your case, apart from the 5 hours with Mr Sweet Potatoes ... any other PV work put in ?
Since I've been a PV (although only chalked 5 hours) & managed to register my son successfully, I am a SAFE choice to be contacted...hahaha.
My hubby did the rest of the PV...he was a 'Saturday nanny' - gathering kids for enrichment classes at the school and then called the teachers in charge to bring them to the class. Packed him a simple sandwich as canteen is closed and he would have to tahan till 2pm. -
I read someone who commented this at ST news. "Got a Seat is fair ,no seat is not fair .that’s simple" .

Religious/clan affiliations is what makes some of our good schools.
Heard from a friend whose child is in one of those SHHK affiliated schools. Some of the programs in the school are actually piloted by SHHK rather than MOE. -
Ririan:
Galleria,
I perfectly understand how u feel
.... I really can't imagine my kids going to a school so far away when there is one school just a road away from my place ... I will pray for u galleria. And let's meet up for coffee at Hougang mall after the whole P1 registration madness is over
Hi Ririan,
I will also pray for you on the balloting on Friday... I never have luck in lucky draws... I hope this lucky draw, i will be very lucky...
GOOD GOOD LUCK to the both of us -
Busymom:
Yes yes agree. I forgot about that discussion. Indeed, a rule that factors in the duration of time the child's family has stayed at the address seems fair to all.
