[Marine Parade] Primary Schools

Good luck and all the best to all parents.

Hi Everyone,
I have been following this forum for over a year. We just went through 2C balloting for Tao Nan yesterday and unfortunately were not selected.
As we are trying not to be depressed about it, we are also attempting to figure out the best way forward for Phase 2CS for our daughter.
For 2CS, we are considering Tanjong Katong Primary (6 vacancies for 2CS) and Haig Girls' (18 vacancies). However, we are located within 1-2km for both schools and our daughter is a PR.
I am quite certain there will be balloting for 2CS at TKPS and Haig.
I was wondering if anyone had the figures from the prior 1-3 years of balloting for TKPS and Haig in Phase 2CS. I have examined the balloting history at http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/content/marine-parade but that only gives percentages. For 2010 TKPS Phase 2CS had a 182% application rate. But how many vacancies was that and how many applicants?
Does anyone have the figures for the actual number of vacancies and number of applicants rather than just the percentages? That would help give us a better idea of the situation this year compared to last year and years prior.
Our daughter will attend P1 in 2012 and we have two sons who will follow in the years to come. Ideally, a co-ed school would be best so that they could be altogether (and so we wouldn't have to go through balloting again!). However, the chances of getting into TKPS look slim with only 6 vacancies for 2CS. Haig Girls' is an option for our daughter but then we would have to ballot all over again next year for TNS, TKPS, NA or where ever for our son.
We would greatly appreciate any advice from the parents on this forum may give regarding options for Phase 2CS.
Thank you in advance.
Trying not to be so forlorn about TNS balloting,

2010
TKPS
By P2C, TUR was 94%, meaning there were 16 places left in P2CS (6%x270 = 16). Balloting was for those staying 1-2 km.
APP was 182%, meaning about applied (182%x16).
Haig Girls
Places available in P2CS = 16
No. of applicants in P2CS = 23
Balloting = 1-2 km
2009
TKPS
No balloting in P2CS
Haig Girls
No balloting
2008
TKPS
About 50 places available in P2CS. About 54 applicants. Balloting for those staying > 2 km.
Haig Girls
No balloting -
Thank you so much for supplying the figures for Phase 2CS in the past for TKPS and Haig.
Do you or anyone else have any thoughts or suggestions regarding a strategy or options for this year’s Phase 2CS in Marine Parade/Geylang?
Thank you. -

past years' stats are ... past years'
you can estimate your competition by tallying the total number of unsuccessful applicants at TNS and Ngee Ann this year under phase 2C. -

Btw I want to ask all you parents out there of my opinion:
I am Indian (not Tamil but 1 of the minorty Indian race and we don’t speak Tamil) and my son will be entering P1 in 2014. We will be moving to Marine Drive next year.
I am confused if I should put my son in Tao Nan or Tanjong Katong Primary(he has been learning Chinese since Nursery and I want him to learn Chinese in P1).
Is Tao Nan too Chinese based emphasis…yes, I want him to learn Chinese but I heard that you need to learn higher Chinese, there is Chinese poetry, Chinese pop quizzes every week… is that true?
Should he not do well in Chinese…i.e. his marks is low for Chinese…will that pull down his overall grade in other subjects?
In that case, should I just put him in Tanjong Katong where emphasis is all round development such as character development and academic?
Very confuseed …any advice very helpful -
DS is in TNS.
Beside Chinese, TNS teaches non-acdemic subjects like PE, Arts, Music & Civics in Chinese. English, Maths, Science and Social Studies are in English.
There are non-Chinese teachers and non-Chinese students (rare) in TNS too.
TNS does not just focus on acedemic, and there was no weekly Chinese pop-quizzes. -
Hi,
I hope to get some feedback as feeling stressed after reading on TNS balloting. My boy is gg P1 in 2015. I stay 400m to TNS and have been SHHK member since early 2011. But not sure if that's sufficient to put us in phase 2B as I know we may or may not get the letter of recommendation fr SHHK. Question is should I apply for PV at TNS still? How's the PV there like? Is it once a week and are there afternoon duties? Worried I may not be able to commit as I work in the mornings.
My next qn is for those who were unsuccessful at phase 2B TNS, did you continue at phase 2C still? :xedfingers: Or did you try another school?
Many thanks!
