Hi Mathsparks.Congratulation to your son! Few question to ask you…Are you able to elaborate What do you mean by saying GEP student standing a good chance. I have a friend his son is in GEP, but he is very worry for his son, as his son study is average, sometimes below average. Do you mean my friend son is still standing a good chance as compare to the main stream students?Do you have any existing cases you know of to share? I mean below average GEP student get into RI or HCI.
Thank u![/quote] -

Yes Sally, thanks he made it to both. He is on priority waitlist for HCI (which according to the principal is a guaranteed entry). ...

The average is calculated among all the GEP kids in his schools’s GEP classes right? Or just in general "average"?
GEP exam paper is more difficult (even chinese) compare to the mainstream exam paper. It will not be fair to just compare the scores.
> I mean below average GEP student
As compare to other GEP kids or mainstream kids?
The fact is: Not all GEP kids are successful in getting into RI or HCI DSA. -

Thanks for sharing Mathsparks. I was also wondering about how much weight SMOPS carried in DSA. I think SMOPS results are held in high regard at NUS High but less so at RI, HCI, RGS and NYGH. Getting a Platinum or Gold may not secure you a place or even an interview at these schools. I kinow of at least one SMOPS Gold awardee who did not even called up for an interview with any of these schools. I'm not sure about Platinum awardees. If anyone has any information, please share.Yes Sally, thanks he made it to both. He is on priority waitlist for HCI (which according to the principal is a guaranteed entry).
So, to share what I know for next year's parents, I believe if yr child's in GEP, he stands a good chance to be accepted. There're kids with medals not accepted by HCI/RI and kids without medals accepted by them. So looks like smops doesn't seem to carry too much weightage in acceptance. There're some gep kids who don't get offers from either of these 2 schools. So it's a good idea to apply for ip schools other than these 2.
:celebrate: to you too for yr son's acceptance in NUSH.
It's been a very emotional week for the kids and their parents as they wait anxiously for acceptance and rejection letters. Glad it's over and now they can focus on the prelims and move forward. -
:congrats: Mathsparks!!! Next year will be my son's turn!!!

I think SMOPS Platinum or RI High Distinction winners (whether GEP or mainstream students) have higher chance to enter NUSH, whereas GEPers have higher chance to enter RI/HCI/RGS/NYGH. Why? The latter schools are not Maths & Science specialised schools and they took in few students thru the Maths academic domain. From what I know, every year less than 10 each are accepted by RI and RGS under the Maths academic domain (for mainstream students only, since GEP students will apply under the GEP domain even if they won many awards under Maths).

Congratulations, Mathsparks. I can imagine the joy of mother and son. The hope of all parents to 望子成龙。 RI must be the obvious choice of the 3. -

I think you are trying to ask my questions. I have checked with my friend, his son below average is of course compare among the GEP. My friend would like to know whether anyone has come across similiar situation (presuming there must have quite no of past cases) would like to share and offer advices.> as his son study is average, sometimes below average.
