I think the primary condition is the membership tenure... ie the longer you join SHHK, the higher the chance you will get the recommendation letter... Volunteering will help to score more point if the membership tenure is the same... For my case, I've joined SHHK for 2 years and have volunteered for 50 hours but I did not get the letter whereas my neighbour joined SHHK for 10 years (even before he got married) and volunteered 0 hour and he got the letter... and I was told the reason is my membership tenure is too short compared to the rest.
This is true and that's what happen to me. Join 2 years, do voluntary work but didn't ger the letter. Someone join 3 years, no voluntary work and get the letter...BigDevil:
Cos she dun have to do any volunteer work! do you know that mummies who wants to register for Tao Nan and Ai Tong have to fight to do volunteer works for over 80 hours in order to get the recommendation letters from SHHK? Some mummies even tried to do 100 hours and all just for the recommendation letters to go into phrase 2b. As a TV cast, she still can say i dun have to do volunteer work! I think quite unfair to those poor mummies who work so hard.
So you are now saying SHHK is being unfair? -
gancheongdaddy:
You can join SHHK as long as you are Singapore citizen and your dialect group is Hokkien... so it doesn't matter where you are borned as long as you are converted to citizen before you join...
Right.. so, what's the point of being 土生土长. Very sad...lih_rabbit:
If she got in via phase 2b ballot and she is a member of SHHK, how is it privilege for her as a TV cast?
The fact is she not born locally and can join SHHK is already surprising. Anyway, she is not the 1st case i heard about privilege given to artist. -
We are wondering why the press are making a big deal…and meanwhile we have run up 7 pages of posts?

Probably gonna get flamed here... but I actually do not quite understand what is the rave over where ZT's son is going etc and whether there was any unfair advantage... Speculating in such what ifs only make us more miserable... Think the energy may be better spent with kids or things that do matter.
I am for constructive discussions but not when it reaches a point where it affects our emotions.
Btw I am an HPPS old boy, DS1 is there now... DS2 will be there when it is time... Better yet, when it is DS2's time, I understand that i just need DS1 to submit the forms on our behalf? Maybe a misnomer but still we get in at the first available phase
Have a great weekend everyone

Unless you are in this P1 registration probably cannot feel
how anxious parents are in this period....
Imagine you are a parent who have done PV and did not even get
into the school you PV ....surely you will
:frustrated:
You will be  if the system favor some celebrity. So far I read,
probably not :xedfingers:
Jia you for KSP parents that are still trying to get a place
:snuggles: :hugs: :hi5: -
Actually I read this news quite differently. I thought the idea of the news was to inform that celebrity had no special treatment, they still had to follow the MOE ruling. I believe Zoe Tay knew all the rules well from the beginning but she just wanted to volunteer in case the cohort in that year had a chance for her to get in through Phase 2B. After seeing that it was not a possible feat during registration, she could have stuck to her original registration at HPPS. I did the Phase 2C registration at my school and someone who had a confirmed place in a good school came to register at Phase 2C, with the thought of withdrawing the registration from the earlier phase. We advised her against it because chances of getting in from Phase 2C was so remote. Thank goodness she heeded our advice otherwise she would lose what was already in her hands. At the same time, there was a confirmed seat given to a Phase 2B parent but they withdrew at the last minute at Phase 2C to register in another school. Every parent has the common mindset, celebrity or not, they take calculated risks for their children. So the above 2 cases I have quoted are equivalent to Zoe's situation and one stayed put with her decision whereas the other made the calculated change.
Lastly, if Zoe Tay has the intention to be on the waitlist of NYPS, I believe her 80 hours are not done for the phase 2B registration alone. It would still be a good experience for her during the volunteer work to understand the school better and for the school to know her better. In fact, outside the normal registration procedures, I believe the volunteer work is even more important for both both parents and school to understand the fit better if a transfer is desired. A transfer is subjected to the school's own admission criterias....eg, tests and existing results in current school etc...
So in conclusion, the MOE process is as fair as it is designed to be and robust and the news report has just proven this point so I am convinced. And of course the fact that every parent is the same, whether celebrity or not. :celebrate: -

should rename this Thread title to 'P1 registration of Celebrity' ... because not just cover ZT, also Vivian Lai, future celebrity for P1 2013, 2014, 2015, etc.
