\"If somebody tells me he will vote for me if I take a pay cut, I don't know whether I'm actually compromising principles - that is, actually, I'm buying your vote\" - Dr Tan

:? I don't follow his argument. By his arguments, all political parties have been \"buying\" our votes with their campaign promises.
when TCB said that about \"pay cut\", that was a reply to a question about donating his salary to charity...not in general term of salary deduction

      the reporting was without context

why are union leaders voicing their endorsement of candidate? :?

shouldn't election be of individual's choice?
Agree. No reason why they should.

While doing some research about President of Singapore, came across these. They are the only 2 Presidents did not receive state funeral. I think after reading this, I understand what is the morale of the story. 😂

                Ong Teng Chiong
                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ong_Teng_Cheong
However, soon after his election to the presidency in 1993, Ong was tangled in a dispute over the access of information regarding Singapore's financial reserves. The government said it would take 56 man-years to produce a dollar-and-cents value of the immovable assets. Ong discussed this with the accountant general and the auditor general and eventually conceded that the government only had to declare all of its properties, a list which took a few months to produce. Even then, the list was not complete; it took the government a total of three years to produce the information that Ong requested.[8]
In an interview with Asiaweek six months after stepping down from presidency,[9] Ong indicated that he had asked for this audit based on the principle that as an elected president, he was bound to protect the national reserves, and the only way of doing so would be to know what reserves( both liquid cash and assets) the government owned.
In the last year of his presidency (1998) Ong found out through the newspapers that the government aimed to submit a bill to Parliament to sell the Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) to The Development Bank of Singapore. The POSB was, at that time, a government statutory board whose reserves were under the president's protection, this move was procedurally inappropriate and did not regard Ong's significance as the guardian of the reserves; he had to call and inform the government of this oversight. In spite of this, the sale proceeded and the Development Bank Of Singapore owns POSBank and its name to this present day.[9]

                Devan Nair
                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devan_Nair
On March 28, 1985, Nair resigned in unclear circumstances. Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew stated in Parliament that Nair resigned to get treatment for alcoholism, a charge Nair hotly denied. According to Nair's counterclaim, he resigned under pressure when their political views came into conflict and Lee threatened to seek a motion in parliament to oust him as president. Nair also alleged that he was fed drugs to make him appear disoriented, and rumours were spread about his personal life in an attempt to discredit him. In 1999, an article about the case in the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail resulted in a libel suit by Lee.[1] Some claimed that the suit was thrown out of court after Nair's counterclaim.[2] However, in a letter to the New York Times, it is said that Lee agreed to discontinue the suit only when two of Nair's sons issued a statement, reported in the Globe and Mail on July 1, 2004, maintaining that Nair was no longer mentally competent to give evidence in court.[3] The Globe and Mail statement concluded that \"having reviewed the records, and on the basis of the family's knowledge of the circumstances leading to Mr. Nair's resignation as president of Singapore in March, 1985, we can declare that there is no basis for this allegation (of Mr Nair being drugged).\"[4]

                      Insider :salute:

                      thanks for the links.

Think OTC was just trying to do what he was assigned to be doing, and yet faced so much barriers. and for someone who served as President, was on shortlist for PM, served loyally for the government for many years.......no state funeral ? No disrespect of course to GKS, but he was comparatively not as high profiled, and he was given one, deservingly I must say, as a big contributor during the early days.

Out of the 4 president hopefuls, if a similar situation occurs which requires a check for the people's sake on the reserves issue, would they do the same ? I reiterate, if it becomes necessary, not to intentionally go poke around 😓

TKL - without a doubt, he is not dubbed as straight shooter by the press for nothing. But I think he may push more than necessary, and pick on too much details.

TT - errrr.... for show, maybe 意思 意思 ask here and there, but will probably not risk to ruffle any feathers.

                      TJS - err, yes, definitely.

TCB - yes, to a certain extent.

OTC was endorsed by ruling party then, when he wanted to do his job, he was snubbed and told he will not get their support he if ran in the next election ( ok, partially also due to his health ), and SR Nathan was endorsed. Now TT is endorsed. :slapshead:

We have a unique situation of 4 eligible candidates. Please vote wisely and true to your hearts as Singaporeans. :salute:

Say No to Puppets. We want a President who will guard our reserves.
