        My comments is this…

I have seen exam papers from "elite" schools like tao nan… and hence believes elite schools does makes a difference…

If they give such papers to their students and expect their students to be able to do it… then, the standard of the school is there…

I would want my kids to go to elite schools such that they are exposed to elite questions… to better prepare them for PSLE and further education…

But if my child is not so bright, then my aim is just to make sure he masters the fundamentals. If the school expects him to do higher level questions, it will take a lot more effort and he will get demoralized right?

The elite schools have the following characteristics: 1) founded long before 1965 (often before 1918, when the British Empire began to collapse) and hence with a cultural heritage which transcends national identity; 2) an extensive global and local network of peer-to-peer connections; 3) deep pockets or auxiliary sources linked to 1) and 2); 4) an ability to propagate the culture and extend the network without losing support.

You will find that national leadership is composed mainly of graduates from one of three kinds of schools: a) Catholic (e.g. SJI) or Methodist (e.g. ACS) mission schools, b) Chinese cultural flagship schools (e.g. CatHigh, HCI), c) pre-independence state-supported schools (e.g. RI, Victoria).

Over time, history has split this into two tiers, such that the top 10 schools or so are considered a higher tier than the next 15 schools or so. Some old heritage schools (e.g. Gan Eng Seng and Outram) have lost prestige; some are regaining it (e.g. St Andrew’s). Some newer ones manufacture it (e.g. Bt Panjang).

Well JMHO if elite schools are defined by their PSLE results, then scholls with good PSLE results probably have a very good system in place to constantly produce good results every year. If it is not constant in the results, then it is probably a case where the student is naturally gifted.

Whether a student is bright or not, the role of primary school education is very important as it sets the foundations to prepare them for higher education.

A good school is suppose to impart knowledge and lay the environment for cultivating the desire to learning. A good school should also focus on understanding of core principles rather than memorizing textbooks.

The students from good school can tackle difficult question bcoz the school trains them to do so.. with the correct understanding, no question is too difficult. Whereas from so-so schools, teachers \"may\" find the easy way out and focus on memorizing (it's easy to ask students to \"just memorise\", rather then to explain concepts to them).. hence when faced with un-familiar questions, the students are stuck.

The type of question probably reflects the type of learning that the school imparts to the students..

Good schools also give ample opportunities for students to pursue further learning…

Take for example, the primary sch that I attended… like "everything" also don’t have… unlike better schools which may have different interest groups, clubs, CCAs for students to develop their potential… I have strong interest in science but the school doesn’t have the facility or resources or special interest groups to allow me to be exposed to more information… so envy of other schools that have better facilities…

Hence, I don’t want my kids to be in the same type of schools that I went to… Now my kid is in Temasek Primary…Not very "elite" but I guess, should be much better than the one I attended.

In summary, a "good" school probably have better resources to let the students develop their potential… Althou nowadays, technology might have narrowed the gap…

When I compare all the exam papers from neighbourhood sch and elite sch, they don’t seem to be very much different. Last yr, one neighbourhood sch set a killer paper, which was much more difficult than RGS or Tao Nan.

But elite sch seem to have a wider selection of CCA. But I just found out some neighbourhood sch are sending their students for golf lessons and ballet. So neighbourhood sch are also catching up with these so-called elite sch.
