How to Teach your kid to focus in class?
-
hmm, maybe I should encourage more instead of scold. I have been nagging and scolding
and I still see them with the same unfocused look whenever I go off for a break. Time to try something new. -
I used to have lots of patience to reason with them the angmoh way. As they grow up, they're well aware of what is wrong and right, but they prefer the wrong way because it's more fun.
My advice is don't waste too much time reading parenting books because parenting is an art, not science; hence there is more than one way to skin a chicken. Just follow your gut feeling. For me, when I'm free I'll patiently reason with them. But most of the time, I'll just use my rotan; quick and effective :spank:
If you have one child only and lots of time, or one army of maids/relatives to help out, you can experiment with different parenting method. For me, i just want to survive my chaotic motherhood as a ftwm without helper, I just to warn them about rotan, they remember the pain and will behave well in no time :imanangel: Don't worry too much about emotionally traumatizing your children with spanking for bad behaviour. It only happen in chronic physically violent family. Moreover once you set your boundaries clearly and consistent with your house rules, you don't have to spank them as often as before. Nowadays my children will not challenge me and i seldom need to spank them.
I found a very good website http://raisinggodlytomatoes.com/
I'm not a christian, but I find this way of parenting is effective and easy to carry out. Sometimes when I'm stress about parenting I come back to this website for inspiration. -

Hope the new method will work on u.. Just to share.. Usually i'll giv DS 2 pages of worksheets to work on.. With the encouragement i gave him, he requested another page to be done himself.. :boogie:hmm, maybe I should encourage more instead of scold. I have been nagging and scolding

I hear stories from my colleagues whose kids can sit and do work by themselves since 4 yrs old or even earlier, and I am really envious….at least it means that even if we are at work, they are able to get some work done by themselves…but not my kids who are turning 4 in Sep. They are twins and it has been almost impossible to get both of them to sit down and do work AT THE SAME TIME. Even on a 1-1 basis, they are not that kind that will ‘guai-guai’ sit down and do work…after doing a few questions, will start to say things like there are tired and why so much work etc etc….even for hands-on activities and games, also difficult to sustain their interest for more than say 15 mins.
Sometimes, I think it is so much easy to have only 1 child, since I can afford to waste some time here or there, instead of getting so frustrated that they are not co-operative, and I have to spend 45mins-1hr with them individually… -
my expectation must be very low coz I never got my kids to do any work when they were 4...

Actually I think at 4, 15mins seems too much... not sure if they r ready... my boys do only at most 5 mins per activity at that age.. sit down and read 1-2pages, do maths 1-2 pages etc..
I do think parents should sit down with the children to do activities as that's the way to know their learning style, strengths and weaknesses...as the child matures, they will be able to devote more time willingly and also to do work on their own. at such a young age, they are still learning, but to learn, they have to have someone teaching. even when they are practising. When the child is good at something, they will b able to do it on their own then.
Don't fret ya, every child is different, even for twins.. you will be able to find the most suitable way to coach your children when you spend more time with them. :hugs: -
I wonder if there are any dads in this topic?
From the postings that I have read, it sounds really familiar to me and that was what I did when I was around that age as well. It seems to me that most boys behave like that, and yes, don’t fret. It is part and parcel of their learning and discovery stage.
I conduct training from neighbourhood schools to top schools, and almost all the boys that I have seen behave in the same way. These boys are in secondary school.
For a 6 year old, a mind filled with imagination and exploration, to behave in that way is natural, and parents should encourage their discovery and creativity at this stage. Asking them to sit still is killing their natural way of learning. If there is something that they find interesting, they will naturally sit still and focus. If you have not found what interest them, keep finding. And the same goes for adults too. -
