I don't know where this climate of fear is coming from??? Destabilise the government, you guys have been too long under the influence of PAP. The civil service runs the country, NOT the ministers and the civil service is not going to up and leave even if an alternative party (other than the PAP) should in the future take majority in Parliament. -

Haiz, this past GE and now this presidential election may have cost me a few friends. :roll:
Wanted to hold my tongue but could not in a few instances and that led to some rather heated discussions. Not that I am that into politics. But I find some of the comments made rather self centred of these people and also petty.
A bunch of friends, all holding executive positions in various MNCs actually alluded that they will spoil their votes because they do not think that any of the candidates are suitable. So I asked them who then do they think will be suitable, no names. I kinda said since they don't think anyone can do the job, why not try to see if they themselves can make the cut to run.
It is a privilege to be able to vote and these people are making a joke out of it. Even if these 4 candidates are not your ideal choice, you owe it to yourselves to pick the one whom you think is the closest to your ideal and vote for that one.
Just my 2 cent views and rant. Dun flame me hor.
How to frame you when you hve registered a valid point. All four meet the criteria and are deemed suitable for office. Just ask your friends to pick one whom they think the most suitable. We are spoilt for choice on this occassion. -

What if the President has an agenda to destabilise the g'ment by pitting them against the people? That's against the g'ment but not for the people. Certainly it had been something that was suggested when the EP was first put in place.
Emmm... seriously I don't think anyone will have that kind of power to 'destabilise' the govt... We take it an 'opposition' assumes the President role. This someone better walks carefully else will be nailed down in no time...
PS: Refer to the lone cat parading in front of those dogs pix in one of the above posts. Who is having 'fun' in the pix shown?
PS2: I have this hunch that the power/authority of a President will be changed / amended if an 'opposition' gains the President role, maybe back to the 'waive hand' role instead of what is being granted. No matter how, his power will always be 'contained' within a 'safety zone'...
Our electorate are much more discerning than some have suggested. -
Whether it is 4 or 3 candiates on nomination day, its high likely that the succcessful candiate will not secure a simple majority.
To prevent recurrence of the above situation in future, maybe the election system can be modified to take into account our electorate order of preference for each candiate. This means that our electorate will be asked to rank each candiate in decending order ie 1,2,3,4. Under this system, all candiates shall be assessed in accordance to their abilities to hold the highest office in order of merits relative to each other.
The candiate with the lowest point shall be declared the winner. -

Anyway, listening to the PM's National Day Rally Speech, can't help but see that he had copied some lines from certain opposition leaders, \"Let's move forward with no one left behind...\" He said this several times and I've heard it somewhere before during the GE Rallies and definitely not a PAP one. LOL -
The nobody group is not following blindly…

My 68 yr old neighbour said that he is voting for TT because he is the most dignified, most recognisable and speaks well and will project a good image of Singapore to the world. But obviously he is not on the internet to read about the latest updates and news and changes.
errrr, I think most people like him still think of TT as the image which our media has projected him to be many years ago. Dignified ? impressive ? speaks well ? Has anyone actually been following all his recent public appearances ? many cling on to the old hero image they have from the past, which the media glorified.

Sounded more like talking in circles, instead of a clear concise confident response, in my personal opinion. -

During the recent GE, I was a observer at one of the polling stations. About 30% to 40% of the voters have no clue what they are supposed to do(due to ignorance or otherwise, they don't even know how to mark the voting slip) and there are also sooooo many old folks and disabled people who are NOT of sound mind to make an informed decision. There was one lady who was so sick she was so jaundiced she could hardly walk and STILL she had to vote. It's just cruel to see this reality.
First, there should be a way for these people to opt out of voting and also there should be a way to absolve the old folks and disabled who are not of sound mind from voting.
There will always be staunch pro-govt and pro-oppo supporters but most people are middle ground folks and unfortuntately these will always vote the status quo. That's how the PAP keep winning despite all.
Which is why I'm not under any illusion anymore. TT will definitely win but that doesn't mean I don't try my darnest to support TJS in his presidential campaign. -

A very confused discourse on the role of the EP. Not really his fault, its such a hybrid role that has powers in some areas and none in others, I don't see how anyone can really understand it. So no, not an impressive performance. But I wonder how the others would have stacked up in that same situation, and Dr TT is an intellectual tour de force.

Its too bad the contest is stacked against the others. The only real way he is going to have legitimacy is if he takes >50% of the popular vote.
