Presidential Election 2011

mommyNg,
I totally agree. I was holding the \"good old\" impression of TT before and thought very highly of him..... until I attended a public lecture that he gave a few weeks ago, and that impression did a 360 degree turn. Lots of \"hand-waving\", did not answer questions to the point, delivered views that I think are vague and nothing much more insightful than most well-educated people could do.
Just my own personal opinion.
so nice to finally hear one person who has the courage to agree with my view. :imcool: :imcool: Thank you.
I am sure there are many many who chose to be ignorant and just go with the safe choice ( usual Kiasi or cant be bothered types ). I think all should really do a good readup and analyse properly on the current choices.
We have a chance now, unlike the past 12 years, it would be sad, if we do not get someone will really do the checks and balances on the govt's actions, just in case.
I hope TCB will be like OTC and be brave under duress, but he does not look as mentally strong or brave enough. But he has the charisma and smarts.
Many of my friends' parents are like Insider's best friend ( as below ) - they just simply don't bother and keep their 20yr old impression of the old TT, image which was media glorified. The press and media can do wonders, as we all know.
With a world financial crisis almost inevitable on the horizon, there will be many attempts to dig into our stronghold reserves to bail this and that out, that is when we need a strong willed President, not another yes-man.insider:
Most people prefer comfort zone and stability. Political immaturity aside, many really love the new coat of paint above everything else.
My BEST friend - sad to say she is going to vote for TT coz he is the only face / name she can recognise among the four. She not bothered to read about the other three, role of President, national reserve, OTC, etc, etc. I feel very disappointed with her coz of her 不长进 (she at least got to read something before casting for TT else it's a blind vote). I believe many Singaporeans, esp the old ones, are like this and I am very scared that my kids will turn up to be so too. This PE highlights again after the GE the 'intellectual difference' between myself and my this best friend and I start to question myself how come we can be best friends? (BTW, 40+ best friend all this while is a Kate Spade woman. Open her wardrobe and one can find mountain full of branded stuff in it...) -

If there will be by-election, you and I will earn another holiday
Think TCB didn't quit his role in Jurong Hospital 'easily'. He quit and made his position known and next time if they want to name Sengkang Hospital as Li-Ka-Shing Hospital or whatever, they better think again...Zann:
Not sure if he will easily quit as president if elected when he can't agree with gament policy next time and yet can't do anything about it. :scratchhead:
If he has to quit his President position to make an impact to govt's future practices, then why not???
If there is no by-election at that time, then the country will save a big $$$ from his salary.

Somehow I get the impression that the people want the govt to dig in more into the reserves to ease their lifelihoods while the govt is guarding that reserve tightly to the point of being tight fisted.
So do we want the EP to ‘guard’ the reserve or loosen that fist a little?
But then again, under the current boundaries, he can only suggest & advise strongly and maybe influence but cannot execute.
Just my layman musing. -

I'm just stating my views.. nothing more courageous than that
Processing information and making decisions based on the peripheral route (such as perceived credibility, preconceived biases, etc.) is usually much easier for most common/busy/apathetic people like us. Taking the central route to process information requires a great deal of effort, quite tedious for everyday people like us who may not see the impact of the President Elections on our personal lives immediately. Until one has the motivation and ability to engage in central processing, it's easy to slip into the comfort zone and pretend to be oblivious to the surrounding.
But I'm glad to see active discussions here, so people can make the most informed decision as much as possible! -

Awwwrighhttt! I will drag myself out of my intellectual apathy and go watch those speeches......

Problem is, every time I turn on Youtube, my 3 y.o. looks for Katy Perry instead, which I admit, is much more entertaining than the 4 Tans.....

insider:
My earlier point is that the person donating would be the one deciding which charity to donate to. It may be difficult to be totally impartial here…Busymom:
Better for the review committee to just cut the salary.
Every non-White is talking about a cut but I think all don't feel having a good chance to have a meaningful cut no matter what kind of review committee is involved.
So if the salary still remains ridiculously high, these 'grey' people (not White nor Black) will like to donate part of their salary in 'protest' of being paid so high.
I see the rationale in that...
If he feels that the salary is too high after being elected into the office, he is free to donate to charities as he deems fit. Afterall, the donation is by him and if there is any karma from such a good deed, it is for his “benefit” anyway, to put it bluntly…
So I don’t agree that anyone should use this to campaign for votes. It is indeed like vote buying in my opinion.
Some charitable organizations should come out to endorse those promising to donate to charities… if I am running one, I would... -

the comments on the you-tube simply ...lol
one of it
When TT is Education Minister: He opened floodgates for foreign students.
When TT is Education Minister: He objected to establishing a 3rd university until Nanyang Technology Institute had been set up fully to become a full University (now NTU). In 1998, When asked if measures would be put in to protect Singapore students from competition \"There is no way in which you are going to be able to protect either Singaporeans or Singapore because we are a small country.\"
When TT is Defence Minister: His son defer 12 yrs of NSF and became a research scientist (what vocation is that?) after he came back to serve.
When TT is Minister for Trade and Industry: Oppose against building MRT.
When TT is GIC chairman: Lose how many billion?
When TT is SPH chairman: Our media ranked 154th.
When TT is president:..........
i must say he read very well from the paper -
I find TKL’s speech and behaviour today rather ‘entertaining’…
But really didn’t like the way he ‘included’ the late President Ong in his speech/talk…
