Can anyone enlighten me on what goes on on Orientation Day? Heard it can get messy with uniforms to buy, books to get, school buses to arrange, etc! Is it better for both parents to be there? Even though it is in November, am already getting excited/worried!

you should post this question in the school thread your child is registered in. I think each school is different. last year, DS' orientation day only involved at tops registering for basc, school bus service and measurement of uniform. We had to collect uniform and school books at a later date.

Query: Should I let my DD going to P1 next year sleep on her own?


Currently my 2 girls, 5 and 6 year old, sleep on bunk beds in the same room. Come 2012, DD1 will be going to P1 and in the morning session, while DD2 will be in K2. DD2 wakes up at 7am while I think DD1 will have to be up before that. She sleeps on the upper bunk.

Been wondering if I should let DD1 have her own room so I can give her a study desk and also so she does not disturb DD2 in the mornings (though I prefer for them to be share room as I need the other room for ironing, etc.

Any advice from anyone?

just giving you my own opinion.
1. my opinion is that for young children, don't have the study desk in the bedroom, ie keep books and bed separate. for health reasons. imagine book bugs...eraser chippings....etc flying around the room onto the bed etc...i think you get what i mean.
2. going to P1 may be a huge step for your girl. she may not be ready to be so independent yet. let her cling onto something familiar as she eases into her next stage of life. unless she is looking forward to sleeping alone, if not, splitting of rooms can wait.
3. my 9yo and 5yo share the same room. sleeping side by side (beds pushed together). no issue with one waking up for morning class while the other wakes up around 8plus. just have to be quiet when waking the elder one.

Jedamum, that sounds like really good advice. Like jeanieg, I was also wondering if I should let my ds1 have his own room with his study table, etc when he enters P1 next year, instead of sharing with ds2. Forgot about the eraser chippings, etc. Now, I think I will keep the study room separate from the bedroom.

But, how to have the kids share the study room at the same time if they need to do homework? Mine just egg each other on, and fool around, and nothing gets done when they are in the same room. Maybe have to do up a \"timetable\" for sharing the study room? Any advice from other experienced mummies?

My kids have their individual study desks and beds in the same room. We gave them the largest room in the house.


I agreed with the eraser dust problem. I think their room is the dirtiest among all rooms. I vacuum alternate day and asked dd2 to use wet wipes to wipe their table top regularly. Books are inside the cabinet so less of dust issue. Nevertheless, entire room is still very dirty

CayennePepper, thanks for the clarification. My friends were indeed from the 80s. They didn't say that majority of students from the primary school didn't make it back to St Nicks or Cat High, but said majority of students in the secondary school were from neighbourhood schools. So I guess the reason is as you highlighted. But they did mention that some of the primary students didn't meet the COP to make it back to the secondary despite the affiliation, so I am guessing the COP is actually pretty high I suppose and not that far away from the COP for non-affiliated students (am I correct?) :scratchhead:

In the \"good old 80s\" (oh dear, I sound so old), if I remember correctly, I think the COP for St. Nicks SAP stream was 260+ for non-affiliated students, and 250+ for affiliated students.

when you're there, ask that admin girl to show you sample worksheets - see how the contents look like inside. They'll pass you a file. You can stand there and flip through contents, see what they teach roughly. The standard is not bad!

besides P1 Prep class, Mindstretcher also got various Phonics class.
they’ll assess your child first, before determine which class he enter into -ie. Elementary, Intermediate or Advanced class. Objective is to ensure kid can read well fluently, before enter P1.

u may consider Phonics class too, if you wish.

If your child's school uniform is available at Bibi n Baba (Shaw House), you can go anytime and get the required sets. Then no need to queue on Orientation and spend time on other matters, if any on that day. I plan to go early Nov to beat the year-end crowd.

JGMum, that's really quite high. Really not easy at all. So even with affiliation, also have to work for it
