Whenever I ask my numerous young friends (cousins, friends' kids etc) which school they prefer, they always choose RI. Invariably! I can't quite comprehend the one reason they give me: HCI is too 'Chinese' for them, somehow they perceive it's more cool to be otherwise? 🤷

        Hello vk2010,

For last year, any idea what's the no or % of GEP boys from NYPS that choose i) HCi ii) RI?

What about the mainstream boys who scored more than >264? Do they generally prefer HCI or RI? What about those boys who managed to get DSA from both institutions?

Anyone with kids in NYPS, if you have the info, please share too. Thanks.

sorry no info. doubt the school (NYPS) has it because they won't know which kid goes where....they don't even know who got DSA offer until PSLE result day when they compile the stats for result presentation (about one thirdth of the cohort got DSA offers).

for DSA offers, most will take RI, and there are also fans of NUSH who did not bother with DSA for HCI or RI

the truth is HCI is no less English than RI and RI is no less Chinese than HCI

          just a matter of perception...

I think ultimately they knew the nos but didn't release them... maybe RI or HCI will have some of the info... my friend saw the Student Intake List 2011, one with the name of students and the pri schools they come from, when she was waiting for her dd at NYGS.... she told me that based on her eye-ball technology, she felt that at least 50% of the girls are from NYPS...

i am sure the sec school has the info on who from where but hard for us to know

for nygh that now you are talking about, sure Mdm Heng has lots of pulling power.....almost every girl in nyps aspires to be in nygh, they find a sense of continuation.....mdm heng was principal in nyps and well liked by all

I do not think that the input quality is exactly the same. For some unknown reasons, most of the Gep students ( if you consider them to be top of the crop ) still prefer RI to HCI. Also, I think the top PSLE scorers are also in RI. ( I maybe wrong. )

So in that case i do not think it is right to say RI add more values to the students than HCI. I would only say that both are good schools.

I am suprised that you say that the input quality of HCI is so lower...do you have data to substantiate what you are speculating ?

According to vk2010's entry, it seems that the admission upper/lower T-score between the 2 schools only differs by 2 points...surely that would mean that the input quality is almost the same.

You are basing the input quality on PSLE COP from MOE. It has been pointed out that this COP does not include DSA students who have been accepted into the school at DSA phase. Take for instance, the 2010 top PSLE scholar is in RI, but his highest score is not reflected in the RI COP from MOE, thus that affects the mean / median as well.

On a yearly basis, RI has about 7 classes of GEPpers, totalling about 160-180 GEPpers. HCI has about 3 classes, approx half the number 80+-. How can the intake quality be similar?

.[/quote]One more question, if RI takes in 160-180 Gepers per year via DSA plus the other DSA throught sports e.t.c, would that leave only little space for mainstream students ?

I thought the schools can only admit a fixed percentage of her cohort via DSA ?

                  Intake size : 15 classes x 30 = 450

GEP class : 7 class x 30 = 210 (include in each class some mainstream high scorers, 3 or 4 or 5 per class)

                  the rest = mainstream pupils

DSA allocation = 50% = max 225 places; does not mean they will fill up to 225 at DSA; they may fill up to eg 150, if not enough deserving candidates, and the balance goes to S1 pool for S1 posting

DSA places are not governed by supply and demand; and there is no rule to fill up all the allocated places for DSA; and RI has 100% full discretion to decide how places to give out during DSA.

Only S1 posting is based on \"supply & demand\" in determining the lowest entry point (t-score cut off point)

吃力! (hokkien). now comparing altitude. errr... one has two mrt stations, the other has one and still under construction...like that can use as comparison or not. The one with more mrt stations serves more commuters and hence the deduction that it is more .....

                        better :siam:
