Presidential Election 2011

At least, bringing the matter to light (like what OTC did) is better than keeping quiet.. like.. whoever..
being an MP, it is an active role; being the EP, it is a passive check / balance at best
the gov't of the day can run a deficit without tapping into the reserve .... nothing the EP could no
of coz, if, there's an effective Opp in parliament, then, we don't really need to stress over who should we choose to be the EP already.. almost anyone will do just fine.. probably.. However, now there is less than 30% Opp MP in parliament.. having an \"effective\" EP is better than nothing.. JMHO..
And since the EP is not playing active role..
Why worry about him engaging the ruling party now and then? He's not going to hinder them by blocking their motion whatever right.. SG will still move forward..
At most, he just voice out and make public what he feel the public needs to know. There is no harm even IF he is confrontation, which he may not be.. Having him engaging the ruling party does more good than harm.. I feel.. -

This I agree.
... I don't feel that there is any contradiction between running for EP and MP with regards to serving the interests of the pple. -
Chenonceau:
Why would the switching of the role put a discount on the desire to serve the interests of the pple? That is my question..
This is not logical. They are very different roles. Requirements are different.
If you want to donate blood but you're rejected due to watever reason.. the next best thing is to go and be a volunteer.. isn't it?
or you just try and try for the next chance to donate blood and refuse to be a volunteer even thou the opportunity knocks now?
Is it so difficult to just want to serve? Why must pple view the desire to serve with much skepticism ? -
limlim:
Because the EP is a non-executive role, not to be confused with what the opp parties can do in parliament.

The things that TSY says he wants to push as a EP is not within the current power of an EP.
That is the contradiction.
BTW, how is he going to push for his economic policy as a EP? Can someone enlighten me? -

Did I discount his desire to serve the people? :?

Many people desire to work. Yet, sales jobs require different skills sets and profiles from welding. You can't go into a welding job thinking like a sales man. TJS seems to approach the EP role as an MP. I make no comment on his desire to serve, however. -

:hi5: That is my position as well.Personally for me... From the onset I thought I had someone clearly in mind as I thought that I wanted to see someone with stature as the PE, but I see my vote swaying but it will not be towards TJS. Based on the clips I see TJS does not appear personable and I do not feel that he really has the people's interest at heart, that is just me... I kinda feel that if elected TJS will build himself up to be a political powerhouse which will have a divisive effect that I do not think Singapore is ready for.
For checks and balances on the ruling govt, based on the recent GE we have already voiced out and the outcome was we have more opposition parties elected into parliament. Let these opposition party members do their job in parliament.
So I guess I have one of the 3 Tans left to consider before Sat.
I do not want someone who will cause more divide to the country. It is already very divided as it is today.
I am also worried that if TT wins, there will be a lot of unhappiness on the ground and the country would become more divided as a result. -
Busymom:
For me TT is out... and for the same reason too. The President needs to unite us... not exacerbate rifts. TT and TJS are divisive.

I think there will be a forum on Thurs night at 9.30pm (not sure which channel and whether is it live).5 more days to D-Day. I've only eliminated 1 ! Still :frustrated:
This is harder than GE ! Is there any live debate on TV ? Any rallies (besides the TT one at Boat Quay) ? -

Maybe he just wants to prove to PAP that it was a mistake to have not made him a perm sec? :roll:at this moment the political system of singapore is such that \"check and balances\" is done via the parliament; the elected president is ceremonial plus custodial
if TJS wishes to be the \"check & balance\" he should seek to enter parliament which will gives him more legitimacy
as it is now, TJS flip-flopped between the May 2011 GE seeking to enter parliament and then abruptly resigned from the party to contest the EP to talk about \"check & balance\".......he is merely being a political opportunist seeking his own personal agenda of holding a political office
where is his commitment to serve and better the interest of singaporeans ?
