Presidential Election 2011

I cant recall exactly but I think TCB was quoted saying that he is concerned that some of the candidates seem to be over promising the things that they would be doing... Do we really want someone who is promising the \"sky\" (in the things that they would do for Singaporeans at large) and yet once voted into office finds that the constitutional they may not be empowered to do those things?
I agree that of the 4 candidates, no one is truly ideal for the role... So really it may boil down to an elimination process and choosing the one that presents the least \"evil\" -
Busymom:
I guess there's a difference between trying to \"push\" for something and going to \"do\" something..
The things that TSY says he wants to push as a EP is not within the current power of an EP.
BTW, how is he going to push for his economic policy as a EP? Can someone enlighten me?
\"Push\" can mean lobbying it or selling it to the ruling party.. Surely that is within the powers of the EP? If it is within the power of the EP, it would not be \"pushing\" it but \"Doing\" it already.. isn't it.. -
Strparent:
So of the 4 candidates, the worst choice would be status quo, the others all have pros and cons, so maybe this can be a first step with a not too drastic change, anyway TJS is only 57 yrs old, he has time to simmer down a bit and be more grandfatherly as what many conservative Singaporeans want. I reiterate, conservative is okay, submissive is not. Else, better change back to appointed President and we can ignore all these points. But it is an ELECTED president to protect our reserves and to check on the existing cabinet, so we are not voting for a respectable looking ceremonial figure BUT pls consider what we are actually voting for the new President to do properly the duties as stipulated. - and it is not to be a yes man.
Actually, if you remember well, not many people voted for OTC 18 years ago because he was viewed as an incumbent who might be a yes man as well. His majority win cannot be considered as overwhelming, especially when his opponent at that time was so low profile.
But OTC had shown himself to be independent, notwithstanding where he had come from.
For all we know, TT or TCB could well prove the skeptics wrong. -

That I agree..

I am also worried that if TT wins, there will be a lot of unhappiness on the ground and the country would become more divided as a result.
I have this concern as well :nailbite: -

:goodpost: I agreed..really cant find an ideal..but just bo bian and left with no choices...today heard from office..some of them rather choose to void the vote :siam:I cant recall exactly but I think TCB was quoted saying that he is concerned that some of the candidates seem to be over promising the things that they would be doing... ok, if ah yam got elected, can he teach us how to defer NS for 12 years ?
if ah lian or ah say got elected, will we see lots of confrontation with the government of the day ?
and, if ah bock got elected, LHL got to look for new office !

hmm... if it is not within his power, even if he lobbies, why should the ruling party listen to him, even if he is EP?

Anyone can lobby, and an EP can lobby. But if it is not in the constitution in the current situation, what makes him any different from another common person?
So to me, he has chosen the wrong forum to pursue serving his public interest.
And what is the point of pushing if it aint going to yield any result? Just for limelight? -

Voiding the vote seems to be a \"cop-out\" mentality... Sometimes conditions are not in our favour but we just have to make the best out of what is served to us on the platter... Just my thots.
