PA lifts restriction on invitees to events on PA-leased sites
By Li Xueying
The People's Association is lifting its restriction on who residents can - or cannot - invite to events that are held on PA-leased sites, so long as the activities are of a 'non-political' nature.
What this means is that opposition MPs can now be invited to these activities.
The lifting of the restriction, however, applies to only events organised by non-grassroots organisations.
This latest move, announced in a joint statement by the Housing Board and PA on Tuesday night, comes in the wake of a furore over the use of public spaces in Aljunied GRC.

It was 12 years - an unusually long disruption not heard of.
I read that it was 12 years... :shock:growie:

The fact that his son deferred NS for 7 years made me sick. What about those parents whose son died during the NS? What about their pain?
This issue goes to the core of National Service, the liability of each SG son to serve.
It also irks me coz there were more pressing cases for deferment but we were told no exceptions can be made.
I will relate one case I hv handled during my NSF. A re-course recruit was investigated for repeatedly going AWOL.
Found out that his family stayed in a 3 room HDB flat, his single mother had to stay home to look after his handicapped sister and he was the sole bread winner.
He couldn’t provide for them with his $90 NSF allowance so he AWOL to work. He was previously sent to detention barracks for this, served his time, came out of DB, sent for BMT recourse.
He AWOL again – the cycle repeats itself coz the poor guy was just trying to provide for his family who depended on him.
This was reported to MINDEF. Result of investigation report? He was sent back to DB.
Pains me to recall this case which was genuinely in need of being treated as a special case for assistance or deferment.
But no exception coz he was a nobody.[/quote]this is :offtopic: , but below 2 links ( out of many more ) detailing the PT special treatment for NS.

PA lifting conditions for leasing sites
Posted: 23 August 2011 2310 hrs
SINGAPORE: The People's Association (PA) is lifting its conditions for non-PA grassroots organisations which want to lease its sites in areas managed by Aljunied-Hougang Town Council.
In a joint statement with the National Development Ministry on Tuesday night, the association explained that as long as events are non-political in nature, it will not impose any conditions on the organisers about whom they want to invite.
This means that opposition MPs and PAP grassroots advisers alike could be invited to grassroots events.
PA said it is lifting the conditions because the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council stated on 19 August that it too will not put any restrictions on guests of grassroots organisations using their facilities.
It said it welcomes the town council's new position.
PA noted that there have been occasions in the past when the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council had told organisers of community events that they had to invite the local MP, a Workers' Party MP, or approval would not be granted.
As for its application to lease the 26 sites from the HDB, the statement said PA had difficulty in getting access to town council sites in Hougang in the past and is concerned that it would also face similar problems in Aljunied.
Hence to avoid what it called \"unproductive wrangling\", the PA decided to lease the sites in Aljunied directly from the HDB.
It has given HDB an assurance that the leased sites will be fully open to all residents as long as they are non-political in nature.
The joint statement said HDB had carefully assessed the request and approved it.
HDB has also ensured that there will be sufficient open areas in Aljunied to meet the demand from other users who wish to organise activities.

Not sure how long ago that is, but if the tabloids were told of the story, they may have made a hooha big enough to have something done.

Research is impt - must be, to warrant a 12 year deferment. But feeding your immediate family members is more so. I'm amazed that guy didn't gone mad whilst he's in DB.
Attended yesterday's rally. A speaker told the crowd about his deferment experience. 6 mth deferment to attend a scholarship course in canada....his parents had to pay 100K bond, and that was after grovelling. I wonder 12 years, how much they have to cough out.

I don't know. Not sure how long ago that is, but if the tabloids were told of the story, they may have made a hooha big enough to have something done.
We as young subalterns dealt with such cases as they were given to us, n I never saw this case again before I left NS.
This was at a time when d recruit's allowance was $90 n MINDEF has a policy of not reporting military incidents in the MSM.
