Presidential Election 2011

Way2GO, very well said :goodpost: :goodpost:Dis election again reveals an electorate dat is more polarized than unified.
Can TT who barely scrapes through with 35+% of d votes now unify d ppl
when 65% r against his perceived elitism n pro-PAP position etc?
One of d first acts he needs to do bring d nation together is to initiate
an independent commission of inquiry to prove once n for all dat his sons
did not get NS preferential treatment n not simply brush off d revelation as a pack of lies.
D results r indicative dat there r cracks within d PAP ranks, bwt d PAP leadership n grassroots.
It also shows up d self-centric n self-interests of candidates willing to sacrifice
a common cause of denying a pro-PAP man in d Istana for their own agendas.
D PAP understood dis human foible better than most n exploited it in their
divide n conquer strategy to win d Presidency for TT.
If d other 3 Tans can’t even compromise to deny a common foe,
their talk of unifying d nation is just empty campaign talk n they deserve to lose.
A golden opportunity has again slipped through d hands of d ppl.
A win by such a narrow margin n lower than expected percentage of votes
is a slap in d face of TT who was implicitly endorsed by d PAP leadership,
n explicitly backed by pro-business elites, trade unions n clans.
TT’s reputation is diminished though he won.
He has his work cut out for him to win over d 65% who didn’t vote for him
or be forever remembered in less than flattering light as Phony Tan.
God bless SG. -

There needs to be a run-off between the top 2 candidates, first past the post does not work and places a lot of pressure on the PEC.
It makes sense in a contest like dis
if d belief is dat d President must hv d strong mandate
n thus moral legitimacy to speak for d ppl.
But would d gahmen of d day care?
They got d man they want into d Istana
n they would be relieved even if it was by one measly vote.
It can also be read dat 65% don't approve of d status quo.
If d President-elect keeps dis in mind n tries to win over dis lot
by doing d right stuff, all is not lost. -

When CNN was having a dialogue with the NUS research expert, they were toying with ideas and one of them was if the 2 candidates' votes were very close, possibly they could do another rounds of final election to determine who would really be the best man for the job. So.......is that ever possible?
ksi,
very unlikely...though if TCB had 35.1% and TT had 34.8%........someBODY would suggest that.
The second idea in the discussion was the runner's up get to work closely with the winner.... Anyone heard that?
this idea is very good indeed. TT has 35% mandate, TCB had almost 35% mandate, the other 30% WOULD have voted TCB if they knew on hindsight....therefore the WISEST move to unify the people now, imho, is for TT to appoint TCB in an advisory role in his Presidential staff,.........dare I say...........Vice President ??

There is a oredi d six-men CPA where d President-Elect can appoint two of his men onboard.ksi:

He can appoint TCB as one, but wat good would dat do except to be seen as a token to unify d ppl?
Would u invite a tiger into ur den? -
is this the first time in SG history that president won, but < 50% ?
35% is far away … -

and TCB is no tiger ( the tiger got 25%
), but the den part..........full of white lions ??
I hope the sweet First lady is right about what she said about her hubby :xedfingers:

put yourself in the shoes of TT … do you think you’ll want to invite TCB to come in and understudy with you, errr … how to be a President, help run the country together with you ?
dun forget … to TT, TCB is a strong opponent. He only won over TCB by only 2% at most. -

Don't agree with this. The other 3 have different things/styles, why should they compromise? If it is possible to compromise, there would not be so many Opp parties existing already. It is precisely bcoz they have different views/vision, on what is best for SG, that's why there is so many different parties.. OF coz, some maybe are for personal agenda.. that, is different story and not in the context of this discussion. We assume the candidates has the best interest of SG.
It also shows up d self-centric n self-interests of candidates willing to sacrifice

.
The PE is different from GE, where, the Opp can cooperate and compromise such that A contest in X ward while B contest in Y ward. The PE has only 1 seat, there is no room for compromise. -

TCB's history of speaking his mind if he sees things r not right
precisely to be seen as a move to unify the people, to show that he is President who listens.

was a point not missed by d gahmen n hence d recall of TT?
