Preparing kids for P5 in 2011

Yes, I've heard of the ridiculous standard set for P5 EL papers...it's really out of this world :stompfeet: My son is attending enrichment classes at TAS and teacher uses P6 Comprehension passages...I've hands-off as I don't know how to coach. But for Synthesis, I am at a loss too. Now, I'm really afraid of the questions set for SA2 :nailbite:
DD only sat for the science, MT and HMT papers as she wasn't well. I'm glad she's spared the potential blows to her self-esteem as her school also sets ridiculous standards for English papers.Passion88:
CA2 results back today.
As mentioned earlier, this CA@ English paper is challenging and
the highest marks in the class is 73, followed by 63 & 60, rest
all between 30+ to 50+. -

Have anyone heard of \"Lu Lao Shi\" (http://www.mylulaoshi.com)? I am currently looking for only COmpo / Oral course for my DD who is weak in this area. If anyone heard of this, will like to hear your views... Or if anyone has any recommendation, would appreciate if you can share.... -

Janet, like you, I have been "forced" to hire an English tutor for my DD and I cannot afford it!
Schools teaching little but setting ridiculous standards are forcing parents like us to spend spend spend on tutors.
Why? The teacher recommends such places to us. She asked me to check out Learning Point but that place is too ex for me.
It’s not that my DD is not good but she’s in a class that is expected to produce A* and now we know how the A*s the school is so proud of is achieved… -

yes, totally agree with you. Our education system has evolved to a system which sets tough exam questions, but there is no link back to the teacher's performance in preparing students for the exams. The hard work goes to the stay at home parent or enrichment center or personal tutor.I hope MOE realises the impact this has on families.

At least your DD is at the cream of the crop in the A* class, what about the mass of average and below average students ? with inflation, increasing tuition costs, ever harder exam questions, it's a wonder how we ever survive in such an environment. The gap between the have and have nots will widen and it will start with our children. -

She's in a mission school - would rather not name it... but this situation is reflective of MANY schools.
My friend just discovered that the boy who has been topping maths in her DD's cohort goes for two maths enrichments! One learning lab and one more, a private tutor. They are from a top primary school. -

Can’t wait to get out of the primary school system. In the long run, kids who gain top marks this way may (IMHO) not be successful later.
As I said to DD, I’d be more proud of a kid with As and Bs who did it on his/her own than a 4 A* kid who had multiple tutors. -

The SA1 gave me a wake-up call...although I've been coaching son's EL, that exam gave me a shock when I saw the questions (grammar/vocab/comprehension OE/cloze)...thank goodness there isn't a CA2 or I would have high blood pressure. I hated the idea of having to send my son for enrichment when I follow closely...my hubby is a sole breadwinner.
Why must MOE set such difficult papers ? By teaching little and the excuse given is too big a class to teach skills so that enrichment centres to prosper ? :rant: -

When kids score HIGH / TOP marks in primary school, sad to say the credit belongs to the tutors/enrichment centres. We pay through our noses to get those marks. It's idiotic that MOE makes the system this way. Aren't school teachers qualified to teach our kids ?cimman,
