      hi Sun_2010,

Thanks for your wonderful sharing. Lovely! đŸ˜‚

mind if you share with us:-

      i) do you see any difference in the Secondary Science curriculum so far at NUSH vs. IP school ?

maybe just talk abt yr Sec 1, since you are such a young, cute, lively, chirpy, vibrant, energetic, adorable girl at 13 yrs old.

ii) do you like your Teachers at NUSH ?

iii) for girls, what kind of CCAs are you doing now (since NUSH is male dominated environment)?
      Phtthp,

The post was by my DD.
I told her to take a look at it and reply tmr, she can't surf after 10 pm.

You have left out some adjectives while describing her like defiant, stubborn , opinionated ... And did u say adorable - thanks , she will feel humiliated when she sees that :rotflmao:

        Frog:

My girl got DSA offers to the above and NYGH....she is determine to opt for NUSHigh over RGS.

Do I let her make up her own mind or persuade her to choose RGS, which is what I feel is a better choice knowing the educational system as an insider - being a teacher myself?

Hi Frog, my DD is WL at NUSH and has CO from NYGH, and she and DH are still having a tug-of-war over which school to go to. She prefers NUSH while DH prefers NYGH.

I discussed with her why she prefers NUSH, and she says she is excited about how math and science is taught there. Being a kinesthetic learner, a hands-on environment would suit her better. I can see that she is suffering under the current system where a lot of emphasis is put on learning for the exams, and the learning is more top-down. So knowing that she is a sensible girl who is making a decision based on her own strength and interest, I will support whatever decision she makes.

I also don't want to force her into something she isn't keen on, and if she suffers there, we parents will bear the blame. She knows that if she makes the decision, she will have to be responsible for her own learning journey in the next 6 years.

        my 2-cents worth.

        IMHO it's a wise decision .

Thanks for all the input, it is good to be civil in responding, and I am sure it be would appreciated by all if we respect each others’ opinion but at the same time mindful of being abrasive in our responses.

I guess, at the end of the day, it should be what our DD or DS would gain from the 6 years of their formative years in their choiced school. The association with elite school might help them to have someone opening the door for them when they pursuit their career in later life, but whether they are able to make good the opportunity depends more on their intellectual and emotional development.

If they spend six miserable years in overly competitive environment, the above might be compromised. Instead if they are allowed to pursue their interest…they might be better adjusted, Perhaps NUSH has the special something which may not been widely appreciated yet.

It seems like a number of children have been won over by NUSH during the recruitment camp which parents have not been privy to.

yr 5 & 6 students (reading this thread) who are preparing for A level and keen for admission into Medical & Dentistry faculty 2011, take note:-

                  a) need both the University Score and the Faculty Score.

                  i) University Score – is computed by the Office of Admissions.
ii) Faculty Score - is computed by the School of Medicine.

iii) Two interviews, plus one written essay and portfolio review.
iv) 2 Letters of recommendation, from someone senior heavy weight in authority.

Chemistry is compulsory - not Biology.

                  b) what subject combination to take?

                  i) for A Level students:

the subject combination prerequisites are as follows:
H2 pass in Chemistry and H2 pass in either Biology or Physics.

of the best four content subjects (i.e. 3 H2 and 1 H1 content subjects) used in the computation of the University Admission Score, at least one content subject (either H2 or H1) must be from a contrasting discipline,
either GP or KI grade taken in the same sitting, as well as H1 Project Work.

                  ii) for NUSH students:

Major CAP of at least 2.0 in Chemistry and either Biology or Physics, and
CAP of at least 1.0 in one other major and in English Programme and Research Project.

lastly, the NUS Open House is usually held in mid March each year. Do visit the NUS website again for the confirmed dates, nearer the time.

I also have a problem deciding for my son now between NUSH, RI & HCI. However, I was enlighten by a few relatives & friends (There are Principals, teachers & etc) that NUSH is the only school in Singapore that does not offer a DSA for sports & music, so it seems like NUSH has the highest academical standard here.
If you see an RI or HCI boy on the street, you are not so sure whether is he really that good academically because he could be from a DSA sports or music class (PSLE T-score could be only 200, which diluted the overall academical quality of the school). On the other hand, if you meet a NUSH student, you are very certain that this student is definitely intelligent because they have gone through & MUST pass a series of tests (English, Math & Science), interview & camp, followed by a compulsory A* in both Math & Science (Including those through DSA Math & Science) & PSLE T-score min 264 (Non-DSA), to obtain an offer to enter NUSH.
Therefore, it seems to me that NUSH is more preferable & would be the best choice.
