        hi UncleLim,

that very smart bright intern girl who enjoyed sms … her parents planted her there in the famous hospital hoping to expose her to some real life experience(s) in a hospital, eg: handling A & E emergency cases. However, perhaps her interest and passion lie somewhere else instead. Or perhaps she’s afraid or scared of blood or helping to treat sore open, smelly wounds, so not keen.

however, note: this world very small. If her attitude is not there during intership, and if NUS interviewers happen to call up her work supervisor to ask for some feedback testimony about her like 'Hello, what do you think of so and so … ? ', she’s throwing away her chance … regardless of whichever hot, popular faculty she’s trying to apply for admission (not necessary just Medi faculty, can be any other faculty). Just one phone call to find out the truth, check on her … will give her away. So parents to educate - remind their child that attitude during internship is very important. Don’t play, play with internship. Because some youngsters tend to take it lightly, like just for fun.

Sometimes, the parents are interested to get their kids into medicine, but alas, the youngsters are not interested, the heart to heal is not there at all, so very soon, the supervisors will be able to spot these few and the reports won’t be helpful to them at all.

For the girl I mentioned earlier, her attitude was very wrong. She chose medicine because she likes science and she feels that she can earn a lot of money as a doctor. I 'm glad she was rejected.

Yup agreed, needs to have the heart to become a doctor and be passionate about the job, in healing people and aiding people to recover.

If just for money sake, will become very tired, and drop out to find something they want in the future, so if just for money the interest will only be short lived.

if she wants to earn more money, maybe go for Law or Dentistry faculty.

              - lawyers earn more than GPs.

              - dentists earn more than GPs … one simple scaling nowadays cost > $50 per visit. If extract teeth, make false teeth, fix denture, fix braces, costs a few thousand $, very ex nowadays.

sall, you are spot on in your observation.

However, educators and interviewers cannot tell their motives sometimes. These kids are very good and smart. They can ace any kind of interview. They plan their internships very well. But this reality is not confined to potential medical students. Many current practising doctors think about their medical practices in dollar terms. And they have very sophisticated business strategies and plans. So don't just walk away from your doctor's clinic just thinking he or she is very nice and the clinic decor is very soothing. Everything is there for a purpose. Doctors who truly follow a noble calling are fewer these days.

come across some parents rich, can afford to sponsor their child overseas to UK, US to study, on (Papa, Mama) finances. However, they still prefer their child to get some form of scholarship.

when qn the parents why, they reply - 'We’re afraid of losing our daughter. She’s very liberal, a bit wild. If no NUS scholarship to force her to return back SG to serve the bond x number of years - she may stay in US, marry an ang no westerner, never return home to us. Then we lose our daughter … '

                        hi UncleLim,

if interviewers were to call up work supervisors, spot check on potential candidates, normally they would like to find out:-

how would you grade the candidate’s overall:-

                        - Attitude
                        - Personality
                        - Ability to cope with pressure
                        - interpersonal skill(s)
                        - Growth potential ?
