Yes, neptune1000, there have been exceptional students who entered university after Year 4, but they are few and far between.

I found this on the NUSH website: http://www.highsch.nus.edu.sg/content.php?id=aab3238922bcc25a6f606eb525ffdc56

      4. Will NUS High School students get advanced placement at NUS?
Yes. The NUS High School curriculum makes provisions for students at Year 5 and Year 6 to read NUS modules directly or to enrol in project/research modules for credits. These credits will be recognised as NUS modular credits when the students seek admission to NUS. Take note that NUS High School students will not graduate in less than 6 years. They will stay for a full 6 years and take on NUS modules if they fulfill the pre-requisites to do so

Ok. That means, the students will get their diploma only after completing 6 full years. Thanks for the info.

However, I also read the following in the link given above:

      10. Will a student have a choice to exit NUS High School if he or she decides to do so?
If there are students who are not able to adapt to the school's teaching and learning structure, they can exit at the end of the 4th year.

I didn't understand this. The students can not quit the school till 4th year?
I'm sure they can leave NUSH before Year 4. There have been students who've left at the end of Year 2. Maybe it's preferred that they leave at the end of Year 4 to enter JCs rather than in the middle of secondary school?

Yes, that makes sense. No point in leaving in the middle of secondary school.

if you leave at end of yr 4, can take the results accumulated over 4 yrs, join either JC or polytechnic. Then carry on from there …

There could be some rare cases when the students really cannot cope with the pace. If these students stay on until year 4, they may lose their confidence and may perform very badly for these 4 yrs. It may be better for them if they leave at yr 2 and join another sec sch for Sec 3.

But I believe these are very rare cases. If they are accepted by NUSH, they should be able to get their diploma after 6 yrs.

I would just like to know more about NUS high school's diploma. Is it possible to complete all the module requirements and get the diploma in 5 years instead of stipulated 6 years?

Not possible. You can leave but you won't get awarded your diploma. AFAIK even those who exited in Year 4 to pursue undergrad studies did not receive their diploma.

Special case is that some PRs have been applying for uni at the end of Year 5 (they can do this because of the modular system, this can't be done in JCs), and leave midway through Year 6 (after dropping PR) to attend university. One person who went to UK to study medicine under this condition was awarded the diploma in his absence.

You can leave anytime you want, just find a school willing to take you.

My daughter will be going there next year. I asked this because our job is transferable and there are chances that we get posted in different countries after few years. So just wanted to know the procedure.

Thanks all for the useful information provided.

being PR has nothing to do with it
dropping PR refers to the special case whereby students leave for uni halfway in year 6. This is only possible for PRs (guys) in NUSHS because citizens have NS liability to fulfill and NUSHS students have almost a predicted final CAP by then already because by Year 5 they have completed the bulk of their modules.

afaik there has been at least 1 pr student each year so far doing this. almost all went to the US to pursue engineering while 1 went to the UK to do medicine.

if the PR is first generation PR, they are not eligible for NS, hence no need to drop PR status to leave the country

if the PR is second generation PR, i.e. born in Singapore to PR parents, then they are eligible for NS. and if they drop PR to avoid NS, they won’t be able to return to SG in future. No EP or PR will ever be granted. You can treat it as someone renounced future citizenship

no difference if SG kids who leave the country before 13 to study overseas and perpetually don’t come back

yes that is true. the persons mentioned were mostly all indian nationals who saw singapore as a stepping stone to the US/west. they don't really intend to return to work here.
