hello!
my DD (5yo) would like to take "kung fu" classes. LOL. so we would like to enroll her in aikido classes. anybody tried aikiForest? i just chanced upon their website when googling for aikido classes in singapore. any feedback? -
Hi, Iβm not sure if my post is too late in giving comments. In any case, I took Wushu (3 yrs), TKD (1 day), Aikido (1yr+), dont like Karate so didnt try.
I like Aikido the best. Wushu is good but teach fighting. TKD - I hate the shouting so stop after one day.
When I was learning wushu, I was quite violent. For example, kicking and using my arms to stop the lift door closing, etc. Aikido teaches a lot of discipline. It teaches self defense and using the strength of the opponent to your advantage. Discipline is very important, there are a lot of rules regarding "respecting". It also teaches you to focus. According to my Sensei (teacher), some very active boys became more focus after few months of lessons. If you search in youtube, you should be able to see some moves and you will understand what i mean. It is so graceful and not violent at all. It is a good form of exercising too. Hope this helps. Let me know if you want me to PM you some clips -
I hv been a Karate exponent for many years in my younger days & i stil practise here & there nowaday kicking & boxing in the air..lol,. but I wld said its has make me to be a tough man & not the violent type.
I hv studied & learned few types frm chinese Martial Art, Judo,TKD.. tats when my son ask me, I told him to take up karate
Well this is my 2cts tog & it shld be taken up as a sports to excercise to kep one healthy

Hi ppnqq
It really all depends on your child's interest. It would be no good forcing him to learn something he dislikes, right? So I would encourage you to ask him for his preference. Maybe he enjoy playing with instruments instead? So it's still the best to ask for his opinion.
Personally, I learn Taekwondo too. I'm a black belt dan 2. Through my experience, I would say there's quite a big difference between WuShu, Taekwondo, Aikido, and Karate. For Taekwondo, it's more of using legs and sparring. However, for Wushu, it's more of using weapons, and less sparring. For Aikido, i'm not really sure about it.
To put it all together, it's still the best to ask your child =D -
Agreed with SwimInSG that childβs interest is important factor.
Personally, I prefer non-sparring, as I am kiasu & kiasee. No matter how much safety precautious there are and how good our child may be, we are not in control of his\her sparring oponent and accident can happen. Thus, taekwondo, boxing, aikido, etc are out for now. -
Who learns to walk without falling?
Might be good to expose them to some dangers
Then, in secondary schools, they wouldn't have the fear of getting bullied
Nevertheless, there are still some dangers to every sports.
Would even be better if you pick up different sports. -

Anyway, he is enjoying his second year learning wushu
I get real nervous when my DS did broadswords and stick in group class.. ..
Luckily now he does private lessons and trains alone.. .
