All About CCTV/spy camera for monitoring maids

installing CCTVs in maid's room and in toilets is wrong... it becomes infringement & Violation into personal privacy, violation of human rights! .
toilet is where ... people strip naked, bathe, wash private parts, undress, change underwear, change panty, bra, pee, pass motion.
maid's room is where ... she undress herself, change into a new set of clean clothing.
leading to dangerous consequences ...
imagine if the maid's boss is a man, or if there are any male occupants living inside the house (eg: can be your husband, your son, father, father in law, uncle, etc).
if any male occupant staying inside your house happen to lay hands on CCTV, happen to play back the video contents, then hide inside his bedroom secretly continue to watch how the maid strips naked, how the maid bathe, it becomes like .... watching an RA movie sneakily. This is dangerous!
Unknowingly, you are turning your home into a potential scene of crime one day - for any male occupant staying inside your home to rape your maid ( including enticing your own husband, your son, etc), esp when the house is alone one day, except for 2 of them. -

I can't believe that people even think this is OK - how would they like it if there was a camera in their bedroom?!Please note that MOM has asked employers to remove CCTVs from maids' room. Check out my blog :

I do know of someone who had installed CCTV in his own master bedroom. The CCTV camera can be switched off locally.

what happen if he forgot to switch it off when it was a passionate day/nite and maid saw tape? copy it and sell the many copies she made?

My helper’s ex-employer had a CCTV cam in her (helper) room. She said it was very inconvenient but she grew used to it. She asked me why I don’t do the same!

The poor maid, totally no privacy. We are treating them like animals if we do this. No wonder there are more complaints about employers nowadays.

Just to share.
It doesn't matter what you use - cctvs, ip cameras, webcams etc - the aim of which is to perfrom video surveillance.
I've 10 IP cameras installed in my 4-room HDB flat. In fact, I've them installed before I had my 1st maid. You can have more than 10 reasons for installing them. Just explain to your new maid when she arrives.
How many is adequate? For users already have them installed you'll realized that the field-of-view (FOV) of the camera is rather narrow which means there're 'dead spots' which the camera cannot cover. So, if you need to cover your entire house then you'll definitely need many many more. In my case, even with 10 cameras, I'm also having some 'dead spots'.
Nowadays, in S'pore, cameras are very commonly installed in shopping centres, MRT stations, lifts, highways etc so just let your new maid know this.
If your maid has a room for herself just don't install one in her room or have one install in the toilets. If your maid is sharing room with your elderly/kid then it's ok to install in the room but ask her to change her clothing in the toilet. This will prevent privacy infringement issue.
Generally, no body can montior the house for 24 hrs because we're all busy working. Most likely we only pop in and out once a while to assure us a peace of mind.
If you suspect your maid is committing something wrong you can have video surveillace with recording.

I've a video recorder but it's not been turned on. I bought it early this year. The reason being that I found one of my items was missing after a service guy turned up to do my aircon servicing......and that was a few weeks later. When I asked my maid she said she didn't notice anything missing. I'm very sure that the item was lost so I bought the recorder to record if any service guy comes for servicing in the future.Chu Liu Xiang:

Later, I replaced my lost item with a new one and, then, I found the 'lost' item. It was stacked high up on top of the cabinet by my maid. Make me waste my money buying a replacement and the video recorder too. :yikes:
As I mentioned if you suspect your maid is doing something wrong then record the video

Its not that we are treating them like animals but there is a need to understand the bigger problem why the employer have to do it? Its since most of the maids are not honest like the last time, my previous maid stole lots of money from us and kept multiple HP's even though we were against it... But having said that its not at all good to have the camera inside the washroom atleast... inside maid's room is debatable.. as long as maid knows about it and maid and employer and fine with it then its ok...
Once the trust is built between the maid and the employer then the cameras can be removed also... its not a permanent thing and if the maid is honest then she shouldnt be scared of any camera as long as her privacy is taken care of...
