      A florist sold twice as many roses as tulips and collected $400 in total. She collected $80 more on the tulips than the roses. Given that a tulip costs $2 more than a rose, find the cost of a rose.

        (400-80)/2 = 160
        so amt for roses is $160 and tulips $240, totalling $400

        Using guess and check,
        if cost of a tulip is $3, no. of tulips = 80,
        cost of a rose is $1, no. of roses = 160

        Actually don't quite like to use guess n check as it's more time consuming.
        Are there more elegant and less time consuming alternatives, other than algebra ? Thanks!

          first, find the total cost for roses and tulips respectively :
          Total cost of roses = (400-80)/2 = $160
          total cost of tulips = $400 - $ 160 = $240

          The florist sold twice as many roses as tulips.. assume we put same number of flowers in each packet, we would have 1 packet of tulips and 2 packets of roses.

          Now, each packet of tulips = $ 240
          each packet of roses = $ 160 / 2 = $80

          Since each tulip cost $2 more than a rose, number of flowers in each packet = (240-80)/2 = 80

          So, number of tulips = 80, number of roses = 80 x 2 = 160

            Michael bought some apples and gave half of them to Jackson.
            Jackson bought some pears and gave half of them to Michael.
            Micheael threw away 25 pears that were rotten while Jackson bought for himself another 20 apples.
            After that, the number of pears to apples Michael had were in the ratio of 1:4 and the number of pears to apples Jackson had were in the ratio of 1:2.
            How many pears did Jackson buy?

                      for both questions, concept of \"same gap/difference\" can be used to solve.

                      For q1, the difference in the number of black and white beads = 1/13 x 260 = 20. Since same number of each type of beads were given away, the difference will remain the same.

                      In the end, number of black : white = 7u : 2u, so 5u = 20 beads
                      --> 1u = 4 beads.
                      Total number of beads in the end = 9u = 180.

                      So, number of beads given away = 260 - 180 =80

                      q2. Difference in number of buttons
                      = number of oval buttons more than round buttons
                      = 105 - 69 = 36

                      In the end, round : oval = 3u : 5u, difference = 2u = 36
                      1u = 18

                      Number of round buttons left = 3u = 3 x 18 = 54
                      Number of round buttons used = 69 - 54 = 15

                        In a school, the children are divided into two camps, A and B.
                        The ratio of the number of children in Camp A to Camp B is 2: 3. All the children in Camp A are boys. In camp B, the ratio of the number of boys to girls is 1:3.
                        (i) What fraction of the children in the school are boys?
                        (ii) if there are 60 more boys in camp A than B, how many girls are there in the school?



                        In a fruit stall, there were 175 apples and 25 oranges.
                        Later, an equal number of apples and oranges were brought into the stall. The ratio of the number of apples to the number of oranges became 4:1. Find the total number of apples and oranges brought into the stall
