btw, how old is he now? pathlight has many high functioning autistic children with just behaviour issues.. Is very sayang for such kids to stay in special schs..But if put in mainstream, they will face problems too..My son has just been given a preliminary assessment of high functioning autism by kkh. Will have to do more tests to confirm.
Although he had delayed speech, he's very bright. He can read very well and very advanced in his science knowledge. In fact he learnt by himself through self reading. I didn't even know many stuff that he knew. -
Parents must know the difference between speech delay and speech disorder. When the child is at a very young age - toddler/ nursery years - very hard to tell the difference. So, good to have the child assessed if possible and seek early intervention to narrow any communication gaps.
With speech delay - it is what it is. The speech is delayed and the key milestones for speech and language are not on par with peers that are of the child’s age. But speech will catch up and the child will be fine. For many of such cases, the child is unlikely to face problems with expressive and receptive language in school. Usually no cause for concern when the child’s speech development is on track.
But, for speech disorders - then, there is a cause for concern. Early intervention is useful to help the child organize his/her thoughts and to help the child with expressive and receptive language. Child may face difficulties in school due to difficulties in reading, writing and comprehension.
Important to remember that every child is different and as parents, we know our children best. Whilst we don’t want to be overly paranoid - and we shouldn’t - it’s important to trust your gut feel or instincts as a parent to help our child if need be. -

Behavioural issues can be modified and corrected. Not an easy process as AS kids must be taught what can or cannot be done/said, even the little things that we take for granted.

Again, as every child is different, be it neuro-typical or AS, the problems faced will differ from child to child.
Studies wise, some kids will face difficulties and some will do well. But more often, AS kids are likely to face difficulties in their communication and social skills. -
pathlight school only accept autistic kids, but not speech delay or speech disorder ?

Pathlight conduct assessments in group of 8 (my son's time) for the Prep P1 applicants and those who r selected must hv a minimum level of speech, good sitting, able to follow instructions etc..think they were given some worksheets to do too. before that, an updated IQ report (as at 4.5yo) must be submitted way before the assessment. The IQ score shld be around 70 to 90 (if i remembered correctly).
My son's prep classmates are all verbal. -

yes I agree I m lucky as in I can stay home to guide him, handle or resolve issues/complaints from teachers almost immediately, but my son suffered a lot due to the late diagnosis. KKH advised us to seek integrated childcare or kindi, no need to send to special schs.. We tried integrated childcare (we only hv 1 in my area), long waiting list. we sent him to a nearly church kindi, the principal said he welcome him and can handle him but most of the time he was isolated in a corner playing toys, till a staff in church told me this is not the place for him.. I hv a hard time getting a kindi for him to start his K1.you are lucky bec yr child turns out ok in mainstream.
but not every speech delay child is like yours. Some still struggling painfully in primary school.
if can, wiser to seek early intervention if possible.
I found the right place for him eventually. This time, i transfered my girl (1 yr older) to look after him.
As for private intervention, we sign him up for revamp @ kidzgrow and planet for his socials skills, he attended 2 schs (1 special + 1 normal kindi) daily-7hrs in sch, 3-4 hrs on sch bus. He will scream and shout every morn and beg us not to send him to special sch. most of the time, I will cry with him but still no choice die die must force him to go as time is running out. We have 2 years to make things right. We stop seeing KKH doc after diagnosis..
Due to late diagnosis ==> late intervention, I defer his P1 in pathlight prep class.
This is how my son spent his childhood. kind of sad right.. -
which kindi accepted him, if u dont mind me askg? my friend has a girl with some hearing problems (failed hearing test at birth), the child went MMI, plus some therapy here n there (TTH, ARC, Leapfrog) at 2+ when the pd noticed the child not really communicating with others. the diagnosis , was asperger syndrome. now at close to 6, she is starting to talk to others and can respond and play with others but clearly still immature compared to girls of her age.

He is five. Going pri one next year. I will let him try it out at mainstream first coz his behaviour is not the violent type. Anyway we are going for more tests to confirm the diagnosis and if he is suitable for mainstream sch. -
Go for caring schs, not elite sch cos those rich kids may not b understandg
