          Help!!

My DD is in K1 this year, she likes to ask me to read books, but she doesn’t like to learn how to spell those words. actually, her vacabulary is not rich at all. i am so worried about her as her P1 yr is coming soon, i am afraid she can not cope with ~

Actually, we are family from China. she has been cared by grandparents who only speak Chinese. most of time, we use chinese home. thats why her English is not good.

I am looking for books, maybe the type which is considered as too simple for her age, but i think can arouse her interest? once she has interest, and the confidence built, easier for next step, right?

sorry, I don’t have time right now to finish reading all the posting here, sure there r lots of valuble advice~

hi, DS2's kindy teacher told me to read books to him with pictures and big words - few sentences max per page. Only when he is confident, then move on to more wordy books. DS2 is k1 this year and his spelling is not quite there. I'm not too worried becos they are still developing and learning. Impt thing now is to read and read. Slowly but surely, your girl will be able to spell once she can recognise the words.

Books by Jonathan Allen, Robert McCloskey, Paul Geraghty, Dr Seuss, Allan Ahlberg are all some of the best finds I've had. Under JP section of the library. Also my boys love the Olivia series books (by Ian Falconer) - even though she's a girl pig but the stories are extremely funny.

I got p&J for my dd, she quite interested although she only can focus on the book for 10-15min each time, think long enough fir her age? She in k1.

Already see some progress, quite happy. Sometimes she will point out some words on my book.

It is slow, for some simple word , need repeat many times and even days. We have spent quite long time on the book 1-3, 🙂 I think the most important thing is never give up and dun push too much.

I also got that series of book from online, about 3.5 dollar for one book. Comparing with popular, price is acceptable.

I got readers for them in the past. We did some, but much prefer to go for ‘funner’ books. I had a book that was pretty much like P&J series only that it was consolidated but somehow we never survived till the end of the book.

Each child is different, mine can’t take that kind of reading so I’ll go with whatever they like best. We read non-fiction titles also (though I’ve been told that there usually is not much good english in there).

As for timing, 10-15 min is very good for so young a child. No point making them stare at a book if it’s not getting in - worst is to drive their interest away from books.

                      Hi all,

Other than the Peter & Jane series, are there any other English readers that are useful for helping young children learn to read, hopefully in a fun and interesting manner? I’m worried that the P&J series might be too boring after a while… Or are my worries unfounded?
