NUSHigh or RGS

My girl got DSA offers to the above and NYGH....she is determine to opt for NUSHigh over RGS.


Do I let her make up her own mind or persuade her to choose RGS, which is what I feel is a better choice knowing the educational system as an insider - being a teacher myself?

I also have a problem deciding for my son now between NUSH, RI & HCI. However, I was enlighten by a few relatives & friends (There are Principals, teachers & etc) that NUSH is the only school in Singapore that does not offer a DSA for sports & music, so it seems like NUSH has the highest academical standard here.
If you see an RI or HCI boy on the street, you are not so sure whether is he really that good academically because he could be from a DSA sports or music class (PSLE T-score could be only 200, which diluted the overall academical quality of the school). On the other hand, if you meet a NUSH student, you are very certain that this student is definitely intelligent because they have gone through & MUST pass a series of tests (English, Math & Science), interview & camp, followed by a compulsory A* in both Math & Science (Including those through DSA Math & Science) & PSLE T-score min 264 (Non-DSA), to obtain an offer to enter NUSH.
Therefore, it seems to me that NUSH is more preferable & would be the best choice.

NUSH intake = 170 or 180, no sports or music DSA

RI & HCI intake = 450 each, 900 in total, about one class (25 to 30 kids) or up to may be 2 classes are made up of sports dsa.....and you are assuming ALL sports DSA are of such low \"academic ability\", diluting the overall academic quality of the school.......wow :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Some facts

Those with DSA to nush do not need A* in maths and science.
And nush has intake about 90% is thru DSA. There is no interview in general for DSA at Nush.

And to state that a student from NUSH is undoubtedly intelligent where as one from RI /HCI may or may not be is a tad too much. Even though there are DSA thru music/sports , most of them are strong academically too.

Does it matter how other people think when they see a student of a particular school on the street ? Do we choose a school because we think it is good or do we choose one so that others will think that we are intelligent ?

how to know at DSA stage whether got A* or not huh ?

does that mean if someone got DSA offer but later did not get A* for math and science will have the DSA offer withdrawn ?

My DD preferred choice is still NUSH, ultimately it’s up to her; I guess if she eventually found out that she is not happy there, she could still transfer out to another Ip school if she maintains her academic performance. I know of someone who got transferred to RI from there this year.

if her passion is towards Science related fields, she will excel at NUSH somehow. Not to worry.

also, lesser CCA distractions ...helps to prepare a smoother journey path ahead, end up in an NUS faculty 6 years later.

Oh dear. Are we choosing schools based on the public's perception of whether the students there are intelligent or not? What's important is how the child fits into the school and what the school has to offer the kid. RI, HCI and NUSH are all good schools with their own merits and differences. A school that is good for one kid may not be good for another.

Choice of school for DS or DD should NOT be based how the school select students during DSA. While I agree that the schools mentioned are all "good" in the public’s view, I do not think that DSA is a fair basis to determine which is better/best.

Thanks mjl. I too do not understand why there's a need to identify the 'best' school and enrol there regardless of the child's inclinations and abilities.
