          Hi,

I am looking for a good chinese teacher for P2 std. I stay in Novena area. I just took my girl out of a chinese centre as her chinese std is below the rest of the class and it is hard for her to keep up. She needs individual coaching. Anyone has any suggestions?
dd is in sec 1 and attends chuangxin school of education at balmoral plaza. she is not that great in chinese and for the first half of the year, she did a one to one with the teacher and she managed to pass her papers (not a or b). her teacher in school (who has been keeping an eye on her) is very happy with her performance. now her tutor has put her in a group and so far okay.

ds (primary 1) was there for a short period but he prefers to have tuition at home (unfortunately the teachers there are unable to give private tuition) so pull him out but he attends their holiday programmes as and when he is free.

you can have a talk with the principal and see what she can do for you. the no. is 6887 0111

I am paying $30 per hour for P2/P3. Existing popular CL enrichment class teacher.

              Hi,

I wanted to provide a update on this as I rec'd PM on request for contacts and I did not reply.

We used this tutor for a year and stopped using her starting from this year. My observation was though their chinese compo results improve (14/20 range), their general paper results slacked. This could be due to the focus of the tutor as she found it challenging to balance the overall coverage.

This year, I send the kids to Molin for general chinese classes as well as han language for compo and compre focus class (as it's timing fit our schedule). This arrangement cost slightly cheaper than having a tutor come to our place but it allow the different centres to focus on the specific areas and they end up with 3.5 hours of chinese tuition per week. Tutor was only 2 hours previously.

The outcome was I see an improvement in their CL results this yr for general chinese paper as well as their compo (both kids getting 14/20 range).

So personally, I feel that the centres are more effective as compared to the tutor we had though she is currently an enrichment centre teacher. I observed that unlike the centre which had a structured program/ coverage which the principal is always reviewing, the tutor didn't have any. It was also not right for her to copy the enrichment centre works for the kids so she based mainly on assessment books.

                  Hi,

First of all, i will weigh if that is necessary to send P1 gal for one to one tuition. If her school work is still manageable, i don’t think it is necessary to have the tuition unless otherwise she just need a teacher/tutor to coach her as just to ensure that she is able to keep up with her work in school. Otherwise, i don’t even see the need to engage a tutor at such a young age. Honestly, i did not send my P2 gal for tuition when she is in P1. But she is coping well in her studies.

Secondly, nobody could guarantee that your kids are able to score well with a top scholar/teacher at such a rate. And do you guarantee that the teacher will not ask for a raise later on ?? $120/hr or $150/hr? Unless i am filthy rich now and i have no where to spent my $$, i will consider to engage them. Otherwise, i will not spent my $$ like this. This is all our hard earn $$ and savings. I have came across better tutors and ex teacher who is only charging at $25-$40/hr and they are also able to deliver the lessons very well too! It doesn’t mean you pay more, u get better quality teachers. And that also depends on the objective of your requirements for a teacher or tutor. But for me, i am looking not looking for quality but instead a trustworthy and more responsible educator . I don’t want crap tutor or teacher who always gives me tonne of excuses to cancel/postpone lessons or sucks attitude. Like i mentioned, this is depending on individual needs and objective. For me, $50/hr is a already a pinch and don’t talk about $100/hr. Just my 2 cents worth here…

My kids did not have tuition at such a young age but I have a bit of regret.

i feel that they do not how to pronouce the words well. This may have some impact later on on their study especially on their oral exam.

It's never too late to learn. Get them to watch more English shows and make it a point to pronounce all the words correctly in front of them. 😄

As for the tutors who charge a lot, my cousin recently told me a story of one such tutor. His attitude was so bad that when she terminated him, he told her to \"watch out\" and said that she would \"regret it\". :nailbite:

                        Hi Susu2626,

Learning is never too late. I do agree with Mdm KOH. Get your kids to watch and read more story books. That will increase their spoken power. Kids gradually will pick up naturally when they reach a certain age. Try to communicate with them more in English but of course do not neglect on our mother tongue too!
