        :offtopic:

not only if can be SAHM - but also if got $ to buy a house (a roof to cover her head) after marriage, as prices keep escalating north, due to influx of so many PRs and foreigners.

maybe can rename this thread to 'Predict your child's Future', not just job alone. The roof comes first, then second job.

          KSP:
perhaps we should ask ourselves what are the jobs available for our kids in 15-20 yrs from now (assuming we are talking about kids still in pri sch now)....

          - manufacturing/factories slowly moving out
          - R&D/hotel/service/IR/banking/medical/gov jobs should still be around
          Good point, KSP!

With the idea of the govt that we may not be needing so many graduates now, and that they be trained in related fields rather than something that our society does not require, where our kids are going to end up doing remains a big question. It really boils down to whether what they love doing and what they are good at doing is able to come in handy - them being there at the right place, at the right time.

just worry that by the time they grow up - Yes, healthcare industry forever need nurses, to look after sick folks in hospice, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. but problem is by then ... will nursing jobs (example) or service oriented industry jobs still be available to our own SG citizens, even in our own country ?

            trends are changing now...
in the past, 'Who move my Cheese ?' - refer to jobs like factory production jobs (example) that had disappeared fast, because our SG factories shut down, relocate to cheaper costs of production countries for plant manufacturing like China, Malaysia, India, etc.

but now the reverse also true!
physically in our own country, many jobs are fast disappearing to PRs, foreigners, etc - esp. in service oriented industry.

look at situation around us, many nursing jobs had been snapped up ... by foreigners.

By the rate they are paid now, and unlikely that there would be any minimum wage set, do you think you'd encourage your child to go into nursing? I think they might have more prospects in Australia if they are keen to pursue it. Otherwise, you need to have lots of passion in the field like Florence Nightingale. The other concern is that she will remain single...

singaporeans by nature don’t like people-service job, they preferred to be served

singaporean nurses who are very experienced have been enticed to work in australia and uk with much better terms and perks which singapore hospitals cannot afford / not willing to pay

all right, let’s cast nursing, or service oriented job aside …

do you forsee a trend wherby due to intense competition growing, one fine day there might come a possibility whereby professional jobs are also snapped up by … growing rate of PRs and foreigners, in our own country ?

no offence intended. Anyway, it is a good example for a lowly paid, yet critical job, especially now and increasingly so. Think something should be done...
